View Full Version : Ideas For Building The Ultimate FSJ???
Ultimate J10
03-04-2006, 04:53 PM
I want to build the Ultimate J10 for off road. I want to do various trails, ranging from not too hard/technical to the kind of stuff 4-Wheel Drive & Off Road (4WDOR) magazine does on their Ultimate Adventure trip or even enter Four Wheeler's Top Truck Challenge. I read through their build-up of 4WDOR Ultimate Chevy K10 and was kinda impressed, but imagine a Ultimate J10 to give their K10 a run for their money while costing a little less to build :D
So what parts (Jeep or not) would help me build an Ultimate J10. I have 8-lug J20 Axles available and plan on using those for starters. Please share your ideas & input and I'll start working more overtime at work ;)

Hmm I thought I was doing that already!! Lockers front and rear selectable front, and a Detroit rear. My self I and working towards Unimogs for ground clearance and built in selectable lockers. Ground clearence is your friend but only if the tires won't jam into your fenders. When you look at mine you would think I wouldn't have any problems but my suspension is soft and allows tires to jamb into the fenders. Solution either spring over or mogs. bullit proof transfer case by the time you do a doubler especially if you don't create your own set up by the time you pay for parts you could by a Stak Transfer case or an Atlas. Tires and wheels I am running Hummv 37-12.5-16.5 with no problems nice ride on the hwy and good on the trail, what I would add next would be a set of re-centered Hmmwv double bead locks. Exhaust I run headers to 3 inch into 3.5 inch works well and has a nice mellow sound! Fuel for a trail rig Propane. Motor a well built either 360 or 401 tranny well I prefer manuals i would like to have a NV4500 but I can live with the T18. I hope to soon start on finishing the exo frame. Thing I would do different I like the Allis chalmers fender look but if I had the time and the money at the time of the build I think I would have prefered a more traditional flat bed fender look.

"Ultimate" is in the eye of the beholder.
I do like the way my J10 is turning out, however it still is not running, so I have no idea if it is "an Ultimate J10" or not, but I suspect it will hold its own. ;)

well, for sure, the 'ultimate' J10 should have a brow tongue.gif
if you want to compete with that K10, a D60 front would probably be in order, a 44HD is only marginally better than a regular 44 imho
personally, i'd go NP435 transmission, bolts right in, NP 205, maybe a doubler... you'll have to get a little creative and put a non-ford case in to keep your front outputs correct though
dodge/chevy d60 front with lockers, locker in that j20 rear end (or, 14 bolt...) either automatic or selectable depending on your taste and budget
build that motor up, or build a 401... 4 bbl, bore it, get a new cam, total rebuild etc...
Winches!!! probably could set up a pto drive unit, get some bad@$$ custom bumpers to hold them...

i heard the mention of a 401. make it fuel injected if staying with fuel for those tough angles so you dont die out. king coil overs and 4 link rear, 3 link front. do some hard cutting to lighten it up. 1410 ujointa and a nice ds. if you want standard go with a t-18, if you want an auto go with a th400. make the wheel base about 110". bob the rear. winch f/r,exoskeloton, skid plates and sliders.

I think derek is well on his way to building an awsome J10. (Ultimate is hard to say..)
Here is a shot after the SOA and the T&T shackel flip. Its sporting 2 D60 Detroits on both. THis is just before he started removing the PT QT TC to be replaced with a 205. He can tell you the gears (4.x something). It has a 360 TH400 setup.

that's a sweet J10. i like it alot. as far as the ultimate is considered there a ton of opinions. i'd go with a minimum of one ton axles. detroit in the rear, ARB up front. hydro-assist steering to keep it driveable on the street but also helps turning the big meats. Suspension is in the eye of the builder but I like the idea of 4-links and coils. Nice cushy ride and tons of articulation. i'd probably bob the bed to increase departure angles. put a good winch up front of at least 9k capacity. beadlocks would be nice. OBA and OBW for trail repairs. Put an interior cage in it and you should be able to tackle the nastiest stuff out there. There are other details I left out but I figured that's a good start for me.

Other than changes in the timing and where I go for fuel I have had very few problems with it. When I took it to Ouray last year because of last minute problems I was unable to use my tow vehicle so I had to drive it there. it is a 360 mile trip I kept up with the flow of traffic easily even though I am running 37s with 3.73 gears. I ran out in Broomfield NM but with some help from the local Ace Hardware people I was able to use my spare bottle to get enough gas in to make it to a local dealer to fill me. Which brings up another thing DO NOT BUY PROPANE AT A GAS STATION if you can avoid it they will not only charge you for motor fuel but will add sales tax on top of it, locally I paid $1.75 in Broomfield $1.45 in Ouray at the Texaco I paid $2.40 the price of gasoline if I remember right was $2.35. This next year I hope to have the tow truck up and running buty if I don't I'lll tow the trailer with the 100 gallon tank bolted in the back.

How deep are your pockets?????
UniMog axles, converted to disc brakes and pinion conversion
Built 401, Edelbrock heads and fuel injection
Built TH-400 or 727
Klune-V Goliath underdrive unit
Ford 205 that had been twin sticked
Coilover suspension conversion, Front and rear
Fox Coilovers
Full hydraulic steering front and rear
42 or 49 IROCS on Stazworks double beadlock wheels
I am sure there is something I have forgotten
Propane is a consideration of course :D

there are 2 very strong points for propane on a trail rig (especially on a trail rig)
the exhuast is immensely cleaner than a carbed rig sputtering on its side as fuel drips into the venturis unmetered...
and it has an insanely high octane number (actually, octane numbers above 100 are artifical, but it is the scale we use, so race fuels with 116 equivalent, and propane with like 120 equivalent are rated on an octane scale, even though they might not contain any octane at all in their composition)
sooooooo you could do a 14 or 16 to one motor, with the excellent expansion ratio and super tight combustion chamber, without the trouble associated with that high of a mechanical compression ratio..
and if we are talking ultimate, why not?

One of the pluses for me is my tank sits on top of the frame I don't have to worry about dragging it on a rock, and if we are in a no burn area I can always hook up to the vapor side and fire up the stove or grill and cook or I can hook up the latern and provide area lighting.

His was one of my inspirations it is hard to believe it is still for sale last I heard. I would have grabbed it if I could have come up with the funding.

Hey Garret, is that why you decided to box your frame?

My idea and project for moderate trails, long distance traveling, and towing:
81 Cherokee WT with nicely done, comfy interior and mastercraft seats.
Very well built GM 6.5, everything that can be done was done to this engine including a custom Banks turbo setup to match the ceramic/teflon penisular pistons for more boost. 305 HP/520 ft lbs at 1900 rpms and over 20 mpg.
Eaton gear splitter/OD, SM465, 203/205 doubler, (32 forward speeds)
Built Dana 60/Dana 70 with full detroits in both.
Goodyear military 37" tires, 12 Bolt hummer beadlock rims.
Wheel wells will be opened up.
Lots of other junk, too much to list here.
I have the drivetrain built and installed along with the axles on a blasted, rustfree cherokee frame from the choptop project. The Cherokee has a new AMC engine so I am enjoying it for now while doing the body/interior mods. Will swap the body later.

WOW  Lots Of Great Ideas! :D
I went through the posts & wrote a lot of the ideas down. Something I gotta remember is not all these wonderful ideas are gonna happen all at once since I don't have that deep of pockets right now. One advantage is I'm young (21), started in a good career and have plenty of time (God willing) for all these upgrades plus gain more experience on the trails. So I'll start getting a plan together & pinch more pennies :D
But anywho, thanks for the ideas, keep'em rollin' still if ya want ;)

but this just goes to show that some frame strengthening is warranted.

Scored myself a Chevy 205 T-case ($100) today for my future doubler setup.
6.32 (1st Gear) x 2:1 (203) x 2:1 (205) x 4.11 =
103.9:1 Crawl Ratio :D
