I need to have a key made for my Jeep's locks because I didn't get one with the Jeep. Since I'm in the process of replacing the engine in it, I figured I would just remove the glove box lock and take it to a locksmith to have a key made. I took the screws out of the back of the lock, but that wasn't what's holding it in. Anyone know how to get the lock out without breaking anything? Thanks!

If it's like most gloveboxe's,there will be a small hole on the side of the cylinder. Straighten a paperclip out and depress the lock through the hole. This will release it.

I'll try that. Thanks!

The door key does not unlock or lock the glove box?

The door key should operate the glove box lock as well, but I do not have a door key, and I figured that the glove box lock would be the easiest lock to remove in order to have a key made.

AS Michael said the door key will not open the glove box. If you get a key made for the glove box it will not open your doors. The door and ignition are the same key, glove box is its own key. If you want keys made for your ignition and door locks pull the door lock and take it in. Remove door lock by opening door, on the end of door you will see the latching mechanism, there may be a strip of leather or caulking this would be at the outside door lock level on the door remove the leather strip or caulking if any take a pair of pliers and grip the metal tab a quick jerk it will come out then the lock will remove from outside of door. ;)

El Gordo is correct. On my 87 the door key operates the glove box. I understand. I would remove the glove box too to have the key made. Sorry for stiring up the pot. I guess back to the original topic :D

Well am I glad I have never locked the doors on my 89. I just went out side and checked that out. I only have the ignition key and always thought it would open the doors, as it has on every other FSJ I had. WOW it would have sucked to get locked out, I could just hear it now........... very calmly.........SMASH!!!!!!!! ;)

I tried the paperclip thing and it didn't work. There is a hole in the side of the cylinder, and when you stick a paperclip in, nothing happens. If you turn the lock like you would to open the glove box, the paperclip goes in farther, but still the lock won't come apart. Any ideas? If not I think I'll just take the whole glove box door off and take it to the locksmith.
