Old topic, Old Wag Problem, New IFSJ Member. I would like to make the rear window work smoothly in my new 1965 Wag. I would like to hear what has worked for you guys. The dash switch releases the window down with gravity in 1 to 3 inch movements. On the back gate there is a key switch (I think) but it either doesn't work or my keys don't match it perfectly. The window tracks may need help too. I know about the aftermarket manual cranks but would like to restore the electric window.
Thanks to Jeepbob and Porkchop for the advise on my new FSJ purchase!

I do not know about the older doors, but on my '87 the best thing is to replace the tracks, you can get them at the dealer, kinda pricey though. Also, if the window is coming out of the bottom track, you will need to re-attach it. There is this black sticky stuff you can get from the dealer to do this also. If the bottom track is all bent up, the window will not stay in and the track will have to be replaced. Still, at the dealer.Your TSM details operation pretty good. Have not had any problem with the key switch, ( knock on simulated wood ) so can't help you there.
If anyone has better suggestions for operation and parts, please speak up.

I've replaced the electric part of the key switch within the door. If you are going to tackle this problem, make sure you have alot of patience and time. in order to get to the key switch, you need to take the window regulator out. To take the regulator out, you need to move the window up and down in order to get to all the bolts. Obviously, if your window is busted, you can't get it up and down. I wound up taking an extra 12V battery and some jumper wires and bypassed the switch just so that i could bump the window up and down. It's long and tedious and the interior of the tailgate is sharp. Good luck.

Dan,
I was just wondering where did you get the switch from? Also did you do any work on the dash switch or tracks and if so how did that go.
I'm a Jersey Shore native (from Brick to be exact). If you head out this way be sure to email me. I'll be heading to NJ in May for a couple of days.

I have a question, mine makes a weird bang sound when it has 1 cm more to move, is it because if the weather stripping?
Also, is weather stripping still available for the out side?

Mine started doin this after I removed the window to replace the switch. I assume something is not lined up right, but i havent taken it back apart to check.

THE BANG !
I meant to start a new thread or restart the old one. Using the key switch, I discovered my going up bang was the result of the top of the glass catching the bottom of the inner belt weather strip. If I don't lower the glass quite so far into the gate, it doesn't catch. When I get around to it I'm going to see if there is a lower stop that can be adjusted.
Sounds a little different than your Bang, but figured it might be a clue.
BTW. Yes, the "belt" strips are avail. Most dealers no longer have it. I got the later version from Kennedy American. Fit was fine. Better than the Chryco Side window belt strips. But, must say that one of the clips has let go of the strip since installing. Ah, nothing like OEM quality!

Anyone know where you can order a replacement for the track the glass sits in? On mine the track that the levers that lower/raise the window ride in broke off the track, and I'm not sure if it's in good enough condition to weld it all back together again... (of course I suppose I could manufacture something.. Might be what I end up doing anyway!)

Quick reply, I think people have found all the parts, including the slider track. Try a search here for Window, tailgate, weatherstrip, etc. Goto go or dinner will be charcoal.

"There is this black sticky stuff you can get from the dealer to do this also."
THe only black sticky stuff I have any experience with is mirror mastic used when hanging plate (frameless) mirrors. Chances are this is the same stuff. Home Depot should have it in abundance in a caulk style tube (for a nice thin bead) and it should cost considerably less than the dealer (we hope). Good luck...wish I had a tailgate and a rear window...

I replaced my window track last summer, not one of the more fun repairs. The dealer has the track and the "black sticky stuff" (got both for less than $40). The black stuff is actually a roll of sticky rubber that you bend into a "U" shape and stuff into the track. Install the track and then put the window in. BTW, use a little dish soap to grease up the bottom of the window to ease it into the sticky rubber, it helped. Also don't forget to unplug your defroster wires (if equipped) when taking the window out. Hope this helps, have fun http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
