Okay, first off, it's not an FSJ. It's a '91 (gulp) Wrangler with a 5-speed.

He bought it yesterday, drove it all day, with no problems. (the Jeep is lifted with 33s and appears to have been used offroad a fair amount).

Today, the tranny is frozen - the stick won't move. The engine starts fine, the clutch does it's job - but the motor dies when he lets the clutch out... he's guessing it's in 4th gear.

It's been in the teens and 20s for the past 2 days up there. Is it possible that the tranny has a ton of water in it and now it's a block of ice?

Any thoughts? He's about to call the wrecker.

Thanks.

Hmmm if it was the XFER case I would say drive line windup.

Given the temperatures, I would try to warm up the transmission. Difficult to shift is often a by product of cold temperatures.

My '92 YJ was hard to shift on cold days -- till I put synthetic oil in the tranie.

See if you can find an Infrared brooder lamp or a heat lamp. Shine it on the transmission for a few hours to warm it up.

BTW this is why you should always leave a manual in 1st or Reverse in could weather. ;)

Good luck....

They put it in 4-low, tried to move the jeep... nothing. It's not just stuck in 4th gear (it may be in 2nd - he's too new to the Jeep to "feel" where the stick is) - it's as if the output shaft is locked up.

Hard to believe: A. there's enough ice in the tranny to hold that strongly... B. There was enough water (to make that much ice)...

Hold on...

Just got word that the tranny blew up. Apparently there was something loose (call it a bolt) that had the tranny locked up. It moved. The tranny was spinning fine (rear end on jackstands), idling through the gears... then BAM! blew a hole in the side - complete with a floor covered with fluid...

Anyone got a spare 5-speed for an early 91 YJ ;)

Thanks anyway...

AX-15s are quite easy to find. Swap is straight forward, just need a torx socket yes I said socket for a bolt on top of the bell housing.

If they swap it out, do the clutch while they are at it.

www.car-parts.com (http://www.car-parts.com) lists quite a few in the North East.

Sorry to hear. YJs are fun in their own right.

I was gonna say that the tranny might be stuck in between two gears, i had a little d50 that ran perfect, then one day i tried to shift from 2-3 and let out on the clutch and came to a halt quickly. Turned out the shifter fork had fallen in between 1st and reverse

Did some more thinking. IIRC an early '91 could have the dreaded Peugeot BA 10/5 or AX-5 transmission. The AX-5 has usually behind a 4 cylinder

Stay away from doing a direct replacement yif it was an Peugeot. Look for a AX-15 from a later '91 on YJ.

Details on the swap for an XJ are here....

http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/ax15swap.htmlA '91 with a 6cyl will have an AX-15, the AX-5 was only put behind 4cyls and they stopped using the peugeot in the late 80's.

Not that hard to swap a new one in, just be sure to have a bunch of long extensions and a few u-joint extension on hand to make it easier.

The exact typ of transmission will be driven by what type of motor is in the Jeep.
If it has the 4cyl 2.5L motor, the trans is an AX-5
If the Jeep has the 6cyl 4.0L motor than the Trans is an AX-15.

The transfrer cases attached to these transmissions are not the same. The AX-5 has a 21 spline tail shaft, the AX-15 has a 23 spline
Tailshaft.

If your friend is in need of an AX-5, and they are close to New England, I have one in Vermont. It is in OK, shape. If they are interested have them shoot me an email olin181818@yahoo.com
