Here is a new one that I have never seen before. This does not pertain to FSJ's but I am sure someone here can figure this out.

I am helping a friend redo his '74 scout. Complete wiring from painless, pull clean and paint everything. Well we pulled the engine to clean and inspect it (he bought it for $300 with no rust anywhere just needed to be rewired) After tearing it down a little we went to turn the thing to see how smooth the pistons moved and to check each of the cylinders. It started to move just fine, pistons moved up and down cam was moving fine, lifters moved fine, but as soon as it turned to TDC it would stop with a "THUNK". If you turned it back the other way it would go about a half revolution and then "THUNK".

We pulled everything from heads to oil pump and the same thing. It is a IH 345 with gear driven timing. The only thing we have not pulled yet is the cam, which we are trying to pevent doing. We have inspected everything and can not see anything that would be obstructing it.

Does anyone here have a clue? I know it does not deal with FSJ's but a scout is the next best thing. Plus an engine is an engine, right?

PC, these motors where used in Inter and Dodge trucks in Oz, notorious for dropping valve seat inserts. have you got the heads off? If not, a valva seat insert could be loose and holding a valve open when it should be closed.

The heads are off of it and it is still doing it.

check the rod bolts and nuts. if one has backed out (not very likely) it might hit the bottom or side of the bore.
