when i put truck in reverse heard a little clunking noise got under it and watched while someone else put it in reverse it looks like it is coming from the transfer case you can see it jump a little is this because there is slack in the q-trac chain or is a problem with something else in there idont know when the last time the chain was replaced if needs to be replaced what is involved in doing so havent worked on tcase yet except to change fluid

Check the tech section of this site. There are some good, detailed instructions on checking and replacing the chain.

I haven't done it personally, but from reading the directions it doesn't appear to be too difficult.

As far as mysterious "clunks", there are lots of things that gone clunk under my wag. I have had u-joints, shackle bushings, and transmission mounts all make that lovely sound at one time or another....Good luck!!!

Is your idle speed correct? sometimes this will cause that problem because inside the transmission reverse and drive use different servos and the reverse servo is more sensitive basically is the easiest way to explain it, check your u-joints on the driveshaft for up and down and side to side play, if they are worn you will be able to see the actual slop between the joint and the driveshaft

All our rigs go clunk when put in gear. While this shouldn't cause alarm it is a good idea to check for chain slack. There is an inspection plug in the side of the case. Pull it us a screwdriver to see how far the chain will push in. Anything over an inch and the chain should be replaced. Also while there either change or grease all your u-joints. Don't forget the double carden joint on the front of the case. There are two u-joints and the centering yoke. It takes a needle grease gun.

If you have the part time conversion kit, like from milemarker, I know the 203 kits (little gear thing - type) will wear out and clunk big time, but I don't know if the QT kit is set up like the QT kit.
