no matter what shafts,u joints, locker or gears you use. this is not mine, but i thot yall would get a kick out of it.its from the rear of my friends scout ii:

this is what happens to a d44 pinion behind an IH 345,t19,d300 with 38 inch TSLs and alittle too much throttle at the wrong time ;)

it climbed about 3 feet up a small tree before 3 of the 4 wheels were not touching the ground, then slid off and caught traction with the wheels still spinning. oops. :D

Lesson learned: Climb rocks, not trees! ;)

Seriously though; can you imagine the torque that the pinion faced when the second tire hit? Curious; was it locked or spooled? I'd bet an open diff. would cause such an adverse (back/forth) motion that it might be worse. Just a thought....??? Bet it made a kewl crack though tongue.gif tongue.gif

ouch. wonder if a D60 would have held up under something ike that. kind of a rare circumstance. to have 3 wheels spinning then all of a sudden land on the ground withthe truck not moving.

ncxj, wed like to climb rocks, but round these parts the rocks are greatly outnumbered by the trees tongue.gif it was an open diff, forward progress uo the tree came to a hault when the left rear left contact with the earth. he was not realy trying to climb the tree,he was climbing a narrow, steep, twisty hill and acidentally hit the tree. he figured it was a small enuff tree it would fall over.it was stronger than it looked, cause he climbed right up it

stuka, its hard to say if a 60 pinion would have broke.its hard to predict whats gonna break. he has smoked 2 727s and twisted several rear drivesahfts into pretzels. his current one still runs 1310 u joints, but has like a 6" thickwall tube,so this time something else besides the driveshaft was gonna give. ;)

another friend hollered on the cb that the scout had broke a u joint,to back up and pull him up the hill. when i got back up there we were both surprised to see the yoke, seal, bearing and half the pinion still attached to the dangling rear shaft.

the broken pinion wedged itself in the ring gear, thus preventing the diff from turning.i had to drag it back to camp draging both rear wheels, and 1 trying to spin backwards :D

Yeah, we did that to a 9" once, with 35's. Much more HP, though. We were helping out the Big Oly Bronco team at one of the short course races at Willow Springs. They got air and the driver didn't lift off the gas and it let go when they hit.
