View Full Version : What's wrong with HMMWV tires and wheels?

Obviously, I must be missing something here. the 37x12.50R16.5 HMMWV mud tires come really cheap, look like they would be a good tire...etc. etc. Why are they sold so cheap? Is there something about them that really sucks that I am not aware of? I've heard they have a tendancy to pop off the bead, but if you get the military wheels, you've got beadlocks for that.

What gives? Are the wheels a weird offset or something?

Thanks!

The bias plys are beyond "ruff riding". They are a bias ply that rides worse then a TSL. The radial are cheap in used form, as any tired used to that amount is.

As for the wheels, they have I think 7.5" of back spacing. For the front you need to run a dually hub, and for the back you need an axle that is close to being as wide as the front. Pete is running hummer wheels with the stock back spacing on his J10, but then his axles have WMS of 74 front and 72 rear I think. You can have the wheels recentered, and when done they are great wheels. But in stock form they are pretty limited as to what vehicle can use them.

Yes, the BS is all out of wack for most of us.
The prices on Ebay, for the bias ply look cheap, ever driven on them?
I did for years, not the best gen trans tire, that' for sure.
Having a base here we can still get the 37x12.5x16.5 radial OZ MTR's tires with 70% tread for $60 each.
I watch the brand new sets (4) on Ebay go for way over $1K every other week.
Dealer price makes you go to bed and cry.
NIce tires if you can figure out how to deal with the 16.5" rims.

The 37" goodyear MT OZ tires are awsome. Nothing wrong with them at all. Run the 12 bolt Hummer beadlock rims and you'll never have problems. They run great on and offroad.

I have a lot of experience with the 36" bias ply Hummer tires. They suck. They are OK off road, but on road they suck bad. And in the mud, the old pattern just does not even come close to the newer 37" design.

FSJeeper - you got any deals up your sleeve on some 12bolt hummer rims/beadlocks?

I would like to get ahold of one or two Bead Locks for mine. I have a couple exta wheels but no bead locks. I know USA 6x6 sells them, but if there is somewhere else.............I would rather go there.

I thought the magnesium ones were the ones for the 12 bolts.
Must be mistaken...what do the 12 bolt kind have in them?

I've used the bias ply 36" and I like them for off-road abuse. Tear 'em up and go get another one cheap.

The spacer sits between the tire beads and holds them out. The two halves of the rim when bolted together compress the beads and spacer when bolted together.
It would be that rubber spacer I would like to get...........two of them. ;)

From what I understand the 8 bolt setup is just junk. Thats why they are almost free.

The USA 6x6 PVC locks are good. I have a set. It is just that the people at USA 6x6 suck, crap service, rude, and serious attitude problems. That is why Pirate and others have banned them. Not because their products are no good.

I one piece mag beadlock runflats will shread tires over 38's, so guys cut the runflat part off of them and run them like that, but they are still heavy even like that.

Hummer makes a 1 piece rubber runflat, beadlock that is awsome, except the weigh like 40lbs apiece, to much reciprocating mass for me. And a total biaotch to install. Took me 1 day and 2 guys and a bunch of tie downs to install 4 of them. Not fun, and trust me, you do not want to go there. Dealer charges $100 each to install these.

Hummer makes the 1 piece rubber beadlocks, with no runflat and they do not weigh too much. Hard to find, I had a set I paid $50 each for on ebay, but sold them to get the better PVC beadlocks which are cheaper.

I have never seen 12 bolt Hummer rims for less than $100 each. In fact, I have only come across 2 sets, one in Cananda and one in Dallas for $100 each rim. Bought both sets of 5 cause they are awesome wheels.

The 8 bolts outer ring cracks, and does not hold up at all in the rocks. Guys are busting them ALL of the time. For mud, sand, and non rock crawling type four wheeling, they are fine and give no problems prioviding you did not get cracked rings to start out with. When you are digging through a stack of 8 bolt hummer rims, usually 50% of the outer rings have at least hairline cracks or other flaws. Choose carefully, this is an extrememly common problem. That is why the military upgraded to the 12 bolt model rims.

Pascal, the PVC Double Beadlocks are better then? I have 4 of the 1 piece Rubber Beadlocks, no runflats, that came with that set of 12 bolt Hummer Rims I got for 450.00 Then I bought 2 more 12 bolt rims without the beadlocks for spares for $20.00 each. Maybe I should just get rid of the rubber beadlocks and go with the PVC ones? Your opinion

I got rid of mine in a trade deal thinking I could find another set cheap, at $50 each off ebay before. Couldn't find any so went with the cheaper PVC beadlocks. The rubber one piece ones are the ones everyone desires, so I know they are good. I doubt the PVC locks are any better unless you were like running 0 air pressure, then I think the PVC would be better because they do not have any flex at all.

To be honest, I would prefer the original 1 piece Hummer beadlocks, just couldn't find any more of them for less than $50 each. Have you priced them new, sheeesh. $500 a set.

You suck BTW, $450 for 12 bolts and the 1 piece rubber beadlocks, pisses me off. Almost as much as the Hyd PTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have over $700 in one set of Hummer 12 bolts and the PVC beadlocks, and I shopped for a long time to get them. Was going to brag about it until you told me how much you paid!

What am I saying, the one piece hummer rubber double beadlocks suck so bad you'll break on your first run. How about I do you a favor and swap my PVC ones for yours. You pay shipping both ways!

Are the hummer wheels the only ones with double beadlocks? Could you run the PVC inserts on other beadlock wheels to pinch the inside bead?

i'm running 8-bolt beadlocks, which aren't as good, but...

I got the complete set, with all the 2-pc. magnesium runflats/beadlocks AND 3 of the 37" OZ tires (one was shredded, three are still good)

all for $100, and they were delivered to me!

However, its getting pretty deep in here and know our friend in Norway has made this an international "Top This" contest.

I have a binder full of military 1.25 CUCV truck titles from the government. I started buying these when the Texas border patrol started getting rid of them. I had a free run for quite a while and purchased a number of them for the minimum BID of $25.00 each. Thats right, CUCV trucks for $25 each! When the Dana 60 craze started, prices of these trucks soared to over $2000, but at least I had a very good start on everyone.

So Mr. showoff CJM, how you going to beat that!
