View Full Version : Hows the Rough country lift?
I was thinking of getting the Rough Country 3" lift with the rear blocks just because its cheap. Are blocks all that bad for that lift, I figure I can swap out to new rear springs later if I want. I have Rustys AAL in the stock spring packs which should help a little as well as BJ's front 1" shackles. I wont have to do any driveline mods with this lift right?

Loki - We went 2" AAL on Phoebe at first. Don't have Rough Country, but... Later (after thinking more is better ;) ) we found a used Rancho 4" lift which included front springs and blocks for the back. We really got about 5" lift with the AAL still in the back, a little more than 4" in the front springs and like it a lot.

i had it on the cherokee. will say one thing. the name says it all
Rough. the ride is very stiff. the rear will twist alot more then the front since it still has stock springs.

I had that setup on what became a parts rig that I drove every now and again for about 6 months. I think it rode pretty well. Firm, but not overly harsh. But the rear springs were very soft.
In my experience, its the rear springs that really make the ride rough or smooth, because there is very little weight back there. A higher spring rate, necessary for rear lift springs, really stiffens the ride in the rear springs. I was running BDS springs in the rear of my GW for about a year with 3" RC springs up front. The front was fine, but the rear was a little rougher than I would like.
I sold the BDS springs and bought some 3" rear RC springs from Don in Missouri. I'll get those on by Christmas and tell everyone whats up then. This is my last try before going back to stock springs on my GW, which is a daily driver. If I'm not happy I"ll swap the springs onto my spare frame and do a body swap so I'll have a 75 box mount Cherokee. A little rough isn't too bad for a trail rig. Plus I don't want to spend big $$ for a lift kit.
I think I will try it out, its cheap enough so why not. This isn't my daily driver anyway. thanks

I don't know if anyone here has this one but I think it may be cheaper than the RC.

The rear springs on mine went saggy and got axle-wrapped badly but the front springs are still holding up well. I'd say go for it but consider a 4" Lift first, I could barely tell I got a lift from the 3" lift.

I liked the R.c. kit but the sales staff @ R.C. left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to do some more extream wheeling so now it is gone and I'm SOA, and it is good.

i have a 4" rough country lift on my 1982 k10 and a 4" rusty's lift on my 1985 wagoneer. The rusty's lift is alot softer but the truck is also heavier. I think that the rough country lift is alot better on the road and that is where my k10 sees most of it's time. It is my big hunting, fishing, trip to the landfill truck and it is great for that. If I was going to wheel it hard I would not like it as much. They both come with crappy shocks. I will not buy a lift that comes with shocks again. They are usually really cheap. Now that I have done a few lifts I would just buy the components that I want.
The big difference is cost. The lift for my k10 was only $300 dollars with rear blocks.
The lift for my jeep was like double that but with rear springs.
Blocks are ok on the street if you have an old tired truck like mine and do not do burnouts. My k10 is a stickshift so I can dump it and light the tires up and when I do boy does it start hoppin around. I don't do it because it sure seems like it wants to break something.
Sorry about all the chevy talk, the jeep is still my favorite.

I got 3" rough country springs sitting on my house waiting to go in. I picked them up used for $90 off of a guy who was gonna use them on his yota but never got around to it. These are just temporary till I work up the time and funds for my SOA
