Can an NP208 replace a Np228 without any modifications? For what I know about 228's, when mine goes out I'd like to plan to replace it with a 208. Any advice?
You'll need the linkage and the rear drive shaft from the donor. Other than that it's pretty much a bolt in. Try doing a search in the tech section for 229 208 swap or something to that effect. This topic has come up often and it's a common swap. You'll need a 208 from a Wag or Chero and not from a J20 though. Don't get one from a GM rig either.
Actually,
You do not need the linkage unless you want the shifter to read correctly for the 208.
I re-used the entire linkage assembly in my 228 equiped 89' (swaped in by po)when I installed the 208. You just need to remove the circlip that holds the vacuum diaphragm on, and do a linkage adjustment.
If you cannot get the rear driveshaft you will need to have yours lengthened. It is "about" 5inches but it is best to get an installed "running" length and have it modified to that measurment.

I did this on my 88 GW while in Moab for EJS this year. The 229 let go on the 2nd morning. Oh well, 226K and it didn't owe me anything. I already had all the parts at home, just needed to get them to Moab. A friend was coming up that Saturday, so it all worked out. I didn't have the drive shaft from the 208 donor, but a rear drive shaft from a QT Waggy worked fine. Just removed the vacuum shifter and everything bolted right up. ;)

Thanks, it looks like that's going to be the way I go
