How do I take all of the smog crap out of the engine? I pulled the pump off, Took the hoses of to the exhuast manifold, and now what! How do I get the crap off the exhuast manifold and plug it up? am I missing any other important items? I was just replacing the mech. fuel pump and decided this stuff had to go! Unfortunately I replaced it with another mech. pump. Im going electic soon. Anything I need to be aware of with the smog stuff? I will soon be putting headers on and switching to a new manifold and 4bbl. carb. Thanks guys!

First thing to consider is that removing the smog crap will make the truck illegal for road use in most states. Here in Louisiana vehicle as old as your's are exempt. The same may be true in Florida. That being said, most engines I've de-smogged the air-injection tube bolted to the manifold and required liberal doses of WD-40 or PB Blaster, and heat to loosen up to be removed. Once this is done just plug the holes with proper sized bolts. Next remove the catalytic converter and replace with exhaust system of choice. --Please remember it is illegal for a shop to remove a converter so do it yourself-- Once this is done pull-off all the vacumn tubing except the ones for the power brakes, PVC valve, and distributor vacumn advance which you'll want to switch over to manifold vacumn from ported vacumn--gives a quicker off-idle avdance-- you can also leave EGR if you like as it doesn't really hurt HP on low --<400hp-- engines and does help with part throttle emissions. The fuel vapor canister can stay hooked up also. Re-time the motor and reset idle mixture --use a vaucmn gauge for this you want to shoot for the lean limit-highest vacumn at idle possible--and reset the idle speed. I've seen idle vacumn readings go from 14-16in/hg to 20+ by getting ride of the mess of tubing under the hood. If the motor is tuned properly afterwards it will run better and get better fuel milage as well. I have even run de-smogged motors on a 5 gas analyzer after tuning and de-smogging that run cleaner than the limits listed for that motor chassis combination. Please remember that the modifications may be VERY ILLEGAL depending on where you live.
