View Full Version : Performance Exhaust
Any recommendations for a performance exhaust for a 88 Wagon. I am looking for a deep sound more than anything. I have to keep the cat converter on to pass inspection.
Also - I have a "tick tick" which I think is an exhaust manifold leak. I assume I have to remove the headers to fix this noise. Should I replace them too? Could they be the leaky link?
Thanks - EJ

The tailpipe is 2.5" from the factory; if you follow the link for my '88 Grand Wagoneer in my sig below, you'll see the pieces I used for a deeper exhaust tone.

id do a custom 2.5 inch with a crossover pipe and mufflers of your choice, mack sure you go past the rear axle to save your torque....

I just had all new exhaust made up using the stock y pipe, and a flowmaster series 70. tube dia stayed the same. Also, spend some time with your cat conv and a big hammer-drill and bit to make it a little more "free flowing".

If you want improved flow with a soft rumble, try the Walker Hemi-Turbo. Pretty quiet at highway speeds, but a nice sound around town. I just run a single pipe.

Try and look around real good for that tick tick tick sound. It might be an air tube leaking.
Hate to see you open a can of worms taking the manifolds off. Then find it was an air tube.
My old stock air tube had a huge hole on the under side of one of the long horizontal ones. Looked ok from the top. But when I ran my hand under it I could feel it papping out.
Good Luck.

The tick may be the flap in the passengers manifold. Mine does it constantly. The flap is needed to prevent backpressure on the firing of the opposite side. I still am debating headers even after all the war stories. They build excellent scavenging and sound great.
