View Full Version : buggy rear spring setup?

Just wondering pros and cons to a buggy rear spring setup re-using stock springs. Mostly I am concerned about axle wrap in reverse... even with TT's extended perches I can imagine the buggy spring unloading and the shackle unloading.

Saw this on Ebay out in Idaho. I think he wants too much for it for the amount of fabrication he has done to it.

Most folks I know that have tried that sort of suspension (OK, the only one that I know) have also had to fabricate some sort of wrap control system because, as you suspected, it exascerbates (sp?) the axle wrap issue to a large degree.

This is actually a write up my buddy did detailing what he did to eliminate the wrap issue that arose when he did his 3/4 ellliptical:

Toyota guys have been running this for quite awhile. I agree some sort or track bar would be a good idea. I don't know if it would hold up under our heavy rigs but I am more than glad to have you try it out for us.

Well it looks like this guy with the ebay posting above already tried it. He seems to love it. He states that he can max out a 20* RTI ramp and score high 7's on a 30* RTI ramp WITH A FSJ!

in reverse, the torque will press the shackle against the frame...

i think, no big problem...
(just my little old 2 cents...)

I would think that in reverse it would unload everything and in drive it would press the shackle against the frame.

I mean even the dealers dock you on a trade in if you have UPgraded the rims/tires. If it had beefy axles I could justify the $3K but... chevy 350, internal roll cage, tubbed rear, relocated batteries... with my heavy foot, those axles wouldn't make the drive from Idaho to Utah!

Berret, is the seller the guy you know or is this another guy? is he a member on here?

I mean I have seen some really nice rigs for sale with heavy modifications and all anyone ever wants to do is part them out for axles, tranny, tcase etc. I think it is just that everyone has their idea of THEIR ideal machine and everyones idea is different. I mean I would love to buy it but just can't justify it.

under forward drive, torque rotates the pinion (and the front of the spring UP), in reverse, the back of the spring would want to rotate up. (pushing the shackle against the frame, in this case, although, in a sense youcould say that the rear suspension WOULD unload, but only as much as any normal leaf spring in reverse - once the rear of the spring is loaded against the frame <thru the shackle> then the front half of the spring gets taut, and cannot allow the axle to push down from the frame, therefore effectively stopping any real 'weight transfer' onto the rear axle)

no better or worse in reverse than any leaf spring or ladder bar setup.

as far as prices for modded vehicles, who knows how to gauge the public's preception, it rarely makes sense to me... i wish i could quantify it myself..

Thanks Peace Dave... I can see it now. I do think that with TT's extended anti-wrap perches the wrap will be minimized anyways.

I guess I would be more interested in the ebay J10 if I didn't already have so much tied up into mine to make it that way.
