It took me about 2 hours to pull the old carb and put the new one in (it would have been less but with multiple trips to the auto store....)

The rough idle is almost gone now. Also, the running on and backfiring I was getting are also gone now. Everything went fine with the install...except I spent about 20 minutes trying to stop the gas leak at carb fitting. All is good now. I just have a slight roughness now at idle. It's funny, it's so much more smooth than before when coming up to a stop at a stoplight, for example, that I think it's going to stall out on me smile.gif

I do have one question though, when I pulled the old carb I noticed that to the right and below of the choke assembly is a little vacuum nipple. It wasn't hooked up to anything before, so when I put the new carb on I just plugged it. What is that for?

Thanks!

Well that should be the primary vacuum source for you distributor. If you still have the emissions hooked up it will run to the CTO's then to your dizzy. Where is the vacuum for the dizzy coming from now? That port being open was most likely the bad idle.

I just went out to look at the jeep, I made a mistake... It WAS hooked up to the cto from the distributor..I even had it taped and labeled. I just didn't see it there when I reassembled...

I just hooked it back up correctly, we'll see later on if it runs even better. Is it a special type of vacuum? When I did have it running before (with it just plugged off) I would plug and unplug it while it was idling and it didn't seem to do anything. Now, the hose coming off the cto was of course unplugged that whole time because I didn't see it.

Well, I just took it out for a spin, and it is the same as before. So plugging in that vacuum line didn't seem to change anything...

I still have the cylinder problem though. I have a fouled plug at cylinder #4. Also compression in that cylinder when dry is 96, the others are at 150 or so.

Don't know if that could be causing my slightly rough idle.

Does adding a squirt of oil and then testing #4's comp do anything?
