what are these spring blocks and what are the advantages/disadv. to them?

I am assuming you mean lift blocks.
They give lift to a spring over axle setup. The downside is axle wrap. Bigger the block, the more noticable the axle wrap is.
I run a 2" block and it isnt a big deal really.
But with a 4 block its quite a bit more noticable.

don't get aluminum blocks either. I have seen alot of them break and spit itself out.

I run 2" blocks in the rear. lift blocks will give you 2" of good lift. After that you're really pushin it in my opinion. 4"+ is unsafe. If you think about it, when you move the axle away from the frame like that, it acts like a lever and you get "spring wrap" like stuka said. What this means is that the leaf spring starts to deform and make an S of sorts. You also put a lot of stress on your u-bolts in this kind of situation and they can become your weak link.
