hello guys I am new to the board and you guys seem to know what you are talking about. I have a few questions I was wondering if anybody could help me with. let me start buy saying My broyher in law is working an a 82 j10 with a new 360 37 inch boggers 456 gears and a locker and nod to boot. He wants to power over every thing but I have not got that kind of of money to speed(12000)here is what I have. A 1978 j10 3 speed 258 six banger but it has a lot of rust mostley on the bed, also I have a 79 10 but it is just a rolling chassis with a cab. I am needing some help on how to use both of them to make a rock truck. I want to use at least a 36 inch tire lockes at both ends and geared to the moon.I also want to change the gears in the t-case to give me 4-1 on low range.shouls I keep the dana 44 or try to find something out of a j 20. I am wanting the gears to give my power not a big engine. sorry this is so long but I have been wating to build something for a long time and I am now able to. any help wouls be nice

If you want a rock truck you'll need to ditch the D44 for some one ton units, D60/14 bolt combo is the most common. If you look hard enough some of these came w/ 4.56 ratio's, but I've only seen 2 factory trucks with these, so don't hold your breath.
The bonus of swapping in the Chevy axles is the SOA lift you get. This will give you plenty of room for 36's, and since your truck is already rusty you can break out the sawzall and cut any parts that contact the tires during full flex, which you'll have if you use stock springs.
Detroit lockers are cheap for the 14b, around $400, and the install is relatively straight forward since the locker fits inside the carrier, and I would get an ARB for the front. The ability to turn off the front locker when you're making a tight turn is a godsend, but you can still lock it when you need it.
Hope this gets the ideas flowing,
Jake

i suggest you talk to Redwilly, a member on here. his sig is as follows... 64 J-200, 60's detroit rear and lsd front, spring over and 4" leafs, Offroad Design Doubler, NP435, Mopar 360, Holley Pro-Jection, Bobbed frame and flat bed, dual optimas, Warn 8274, 36" tsl sx's
he has it set up right and i think he can give you lots of good ideas for your rig. i think we all have good ideas but he's already done what you want to do. :D

Nick, I tried e-mailing the guy myself. Wanted to know some specifics...well to say the least, didn't hear from'em.
Being on a tight budget is gonna be kinda hard.
Just wanted to be honest here ;)
I say stick around read up on other peoples sig's, like Nick's.
See what kind of wheelin' they do and go from there.
There's guys from monster lifts and big tires to guys with no lifts and big tires...big and small engines, complete bodies to nothing but a firewall like KYJ10 (just kiddin' KY ;) ).
Read up.

my advice would be to use the running 78, keep the 258 and 3 speed and QT if it has a low range unit. Swap in a low range QT if it doesn't and also install the mile marker part time kit in either case. That takes care of the drivetrian.
As far as axles, get at least 3/4 ton D44/D60 combos or better yet find a D60/GM14 out of a chevy PU. 4.10 gears or better would be advisable. weld up the gears in the rear and in the front too if you want. work out a hydro assist system to help with steering. Hi steer won't hurt either.
Shorten the frame 10 inches (talk to KYJ10 about this) and get your wheelbase down to 110" or so. Ditch your rusty bed and flatbed it back there, replace the cab if you need to aswell. If your frame is better on the 79, swap the drivetrain over to it instead of the cab. Go SOA up front and use River Beast's kit out back for lift, then slam some 35-38" tires under there.

i agree with the above statement except for the tranny/t-case part. that 3 speed is junk and i'm sorry to anyone that thinks it's worth a hoot. grab yourself a t-176 bell and a 435 4 speed w/ 205 and call it good. i'm not sure what side your pig sits on but either a 435 or 465 will do. with the 435 you can run a doubler with the 205 and a 203 thus increasing your gear selection and low range. if it's on the pass side then run the 465 like me. the granny gear alone will drop your crawl. i don't know i'm rambling
