In the tech library they say my engine(327 2 bbr)produces 250 HP, somehow I don't think thats right, would it make sence for the 327 to produce more HP than a 401? so assuming thats wrong what is the HP out-put of my engine? (327ci, 2bbr carb, no upgrades)

According to the chiltons those specs are right. 250hp and 340ftlb torque. The 327 was a hoss of a motor!

Negative, in '74 or sometime near then they change the way the measured torq from the flywheel to the rear wheels (I am not sure where they measured it but I am sure some one will correct me). The 327 put out about 150 to 170 hp in todays measurements. Do a search on this subject and you can find a better answer or wait for better answers. I have been drinking so I am just not sure anymore http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

In the muscle car days, horsepower was measured on a 'naked' motor--no accessory drives, no tranny hooked up, straight exhaust. Because these figures weren't very 'real world' manufacturers were forced to change their method of measurement to a more 'net horsepower' approach vs the 'gross horsepower.'
Notice the relatively low compression ratios on AMC motors? There's no way a normally-aspirated (borrowing from Scotty's big word stash) motor with compression that low can make those horsepower figures.

In my 1968 Motors auto repair manual it says under general engine specs., 1965-68 J-100 Series, V8-327, 2Barrel, Compression Ratio 8.70, Max. Brake H.P. 250@4700 rpm, Max. Torque lbs.ft. 340@2600 rpm, Normal oil pressure 55 ibs. Thats right out of the book, hope it helps.
