I was finishing up my cage, and a got my other boggers bolted up. I got so excited to pull it out of the barn, I forgot I had my hubs off, and spindle nuts off. Well I got just to the bottom of my driveway, when I heard a funny noise in the front end. I hopped out, and noticed my tires were about to fall off. I luckily got it back in the barn without loosing anything. One tire was being help on by the caliper, which had almost pulled out of the clip holding it together. I would have kicked myself if I went out on the road! I had the front end apart to install the 35 spline stubs. I have done similar things in the past. Need to take some ritalin, and calm down about my Heep! Dennis ;)

At least you're not a mechanic. I do stuff like that all the time. And it's always to my own ride! Go ahead ask why I have all new lug studs on my left front wheel. An expensive tire rotation that was. I'm just glad to hear I'm not the only one!

My cousin was working on his brakes, ans while the calipers were off the rotors, he climbed in to change CD's, and for some reason stepped on his brakes. Popped his calipers out!

My recent stupid story ...

I was in the process of pulling the engine/drivetrain from my Cherokee. I was under it unbolting the driveshafts. The rear one was out, got the bolts out of the front u-joint and hit it with a rubber mallet to break it loose. Well as soon as it came loose, the Cherokee started rolling! daauuu! the trans being in park was the only thing holding it from rolling down my driveway and over me into the street! I put my feet under both front wheels and was very thankful that stopped it ... I jammed the rubber mallet under one tire and went and got some good chocks ... DOH!

DOH! The guy who does gears at one of the local shops did some thing simular. He was putting a locker in the rear of a Dodge 3/4 ton which with full floaters he didn't have to jack up to pull the rear axles. Since he was used to doing 1/2 tons where he had to jack up to pull the axles there by securing the vehicle on the lift he didn't set the brakes nor did he chock the wheels and when he pulled the secound axle out the Dodge rolled off the front of the lift. What happened after that was a master piece of getting it back up on the lift assaing the damage then getting the parts toi replace what was damaged (front drive shaft and tranny pan) pluss finshing up the original work. Then sitting down with the customer to explain why his truck wasn't ready on time. I had delt with this shop for awhile but that was when I knew I could really trust them.

A few months ago, a friend of mine shredded his front spiders on a d30 in an XJ with automatic hubs. He decided to remove the axle shafts in the front as per the advice of a few backseat wrenchers. His pit crew reinstalled the rotors, hubs etc... everything but the axle shafts. Well, on his truck the axle assembly is held on to the truck by a nut that threads onto the axle shaft. On the ride home he did a brake check at 35 mph and lost a front wheel. He's lucky it didn't happen on the freeway...cause he would have been toast!!! I know cause I was right behind him when it happened. His truck bounced 5 times on the asphalt and left some nice notches in the road!!!

On my old Scout II, with the reverse open hood, I had it in the garage and thought I'd rather work outside. I backed it out of the garage with the hood up, snagged it on the overhead garage door, mangling the hood hinges and the garage door. That was a fun one to explain to dad!

I had a dream the other night that I took a perfect looking J10, ripped every stock piece of metal out, minus the frame, spent like $12,0000 and made it a play toy. What a dream I tell you. Oh wait, thats reality!

I finally manavered my transfer case in place and pulled the transmission jack over to hold it in place. As I got out from under the jeep I heard a Crash. OOPS I didn't tighten the screw to hold the hydralic pressure on the jack. Oh yeah the first time I put the transfer case up I realized the 4 eyeholes that matched the transfer case to the transmission only had three. After it was sealed. Oh yeah i also forgot to drain the transmission. I should have stayed in bed.

here's another one, but not has clumsy.

back when I had my '89 wrangler(10 yrs ago), it was cutting out while driving. then quit completely. I pulled the fuel line off, cranked it over, no fuel... needs a fuel pump, right? I spent all day pulling the tank and replacing the fuel pump. Crank it, nothing! turns out, it was the crank trigger magnetic pickup had come loose from its mount, I clicked it back in and it cranked right up!!!!

The fuel pump will not come on untill it sees good oil pressure, me turning on the key and cranking it a few times was not enough to build oil pressure and turn on the pump ... DOH!

It's a good thing that I've never done something like that, wait does dropping a driveshaft because I forgot to tighten all of the bolts count?

The hood thing is funny. I did that once in my Ranger. cracked the windshield, bent the hinges on the hood totaly useless, and about drove off into a field!

I have had it happen to me three times in my jeep! Once on the interstate, once on the highway, and once through town.

Finally put in hood clips!
