My mechanic wants $2775.00 for a rebuilt unit, Does anyone have a recommended place to get a new/ rebuilt unit for less. I had it go out last weekend and the mechanic says that most of the parts look good inside?! But the case has a hole in it. I am new to all this so I would appreciate any help.

That sounds awful high but I know the viscous coupling is costly. Did you start by looking in the for sale section? Would a good used unit be acceptable?

reddog,
I will look there. Good idea. Sounds like a lot to me too. If the used unit was in good shape I suppose so.

There are guys with 229s on the board - look at Alli3s post in the wanted section. Shipping could be costly though. I get around to the pick-ur-parts around here in SoCal and I have seen a number of 229s in the past. I was reading a LOOONG thread in the archives about xfers cases. I also did some searches and found little on rebuilt 229s, I am sure that alot of reputable shops do it.

I was thinking that if your internals ARE good than all you really need is the case and you can swap your internals into the "new" case. Maybe replace the chain/bearings if needed. Are you in a hurry to get it fixed?

I am curious, how did your case get a hole punched in it?

that seems to be a common prollem with the 228/229.moreso than any other aluminum case, including the BW QT. ive seen/heard about mre cracked/broken 229s than id care to count...

matter of fact, thats howi ended up with my GW. my xj friend had a 229 with a cracked case, and we went halves on it cause he wanted the 229.

i think sometimes a squirrel will run under there and hit it with a little hammer... smile.gif

Jettfuel, They have 229's here I haven't rechecked the prices, but seems like about 1Ktransfer cases (http://www.transfercases.com/)

Scotty's 4x4 has used 228s/229s for around $700 (as of last January, when my 228 blew up). They're in Fontana. I had mine rebuilt by CJ's offroad in the San Fernando Valley (Northridge) for $1500, including r&r. He did a very complete job. He's a small shop specializing only in Jeeps, and he does good work at reasonable, fair prices. But the Valley may be a bit far for you to go.
