my stock 85 GW has been starting fine when cold, but then dies unpredictably, just like the key was shut off. Replaced ignition module, coil, pickup coil, cap/rotor (as suggested with my thanks on this site). It apparently still has spark when it dies - One thing i have noticed is that when you take the gas cap off when its hot (both jeep and weather) I get a big whoosh - does this sound like a symptom of my problem? I'm going nuts here - my riceburner will not pull my fishing boat... Any ideas? I'm thankful for suggestions so far...

If the whoosh is in coming air it should be the problem. Is the gas cap stock? On my 1976 the cap only vents inward so it can build up pressure. I did have a poor conducting electrical connection cause a problem like yours. Did you look to see if the choke was full open? Good luck.. CUL.. ;) . ds..

Could be that your gas tank vent is clogged and the fuel pump can't overcome the clog to be able to keep pumping fuel. When you open the cap the vacuum is released and the pump can do its job again. Try running it with the gas cap off just to see what happens.
