Ok, I am going to install a reman long block next week. I had a thought to go ahead and pull the engine and trans as an assembly so that I could get the trans overhauled.
My questin is: has anyone pulled the both together and how much harder was it? Any advise? Can I leave the transfer case in?

I have done it and I found it to be a lot easier this way. I just remove the front grill, front clip that holds the grill, and radiator. Remove the hump cover and it slides in easier than in a 2 dollar......Sorry this is a family site. This is really a lot easier just make sure that you put the chain on the hoist in the right spot for balance.

Take the t-case off! It does not balance very good without the tranny, I am sure.

I am sure someone else might give you some insight. This is the way I like to do it. It requires a little more work to remove the extra parts (you can leave them on and still do it) but I prefer this method.

If you do what PorkChop says and pull the grill etc it is easier. If you're not up for that pull the trans off.

Having swapped a motor in my GW by separating the tranny and pulling it up and out, I would pull the engine and tranny as a unit if I had to do it again. I had a rough time getting the tranny-to-engine bolts aligned and tightened and it was tough just getting the motor up and over the front of the rig and down into the engine compartment without banging up all the stuff inside the compartment like the plastic master cylinder, the heater box, A/C hoses, etc.

Back in the old days(hehe) I had an 83 CJ-7 with a 258 & 999 tranny. I replaced the 258 with a built 360 and swapped the whole thing as a unit. Worked great. I had the entire front clip removed(only 13 bolts) and dropped it in like that. Then mounted the xfer case. Worked great and didn't have to cuss so much http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
