been there, did it, worked great, got rid of whole system http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I did it because I would forget to lock it up before I went into the hole and was tired of replacing spider gears in my D27 frt end. I also ran out of spider gears.

What is the emergency drive switch? Is it the engagement for the four wheel drive on older cherokees and wagons? Thanks for the education in advance.

I relocated mine to the tranny hump at the top. It is out of the way and looks natural.

The E-Drive switch is a vacuum switch used to lock (internally) the front and rear output shafts together for a 50/50 split of power on the BW 1339 Quadratrac which is otherwise a full-time case utilizing a LSD type center differntial to transfer power to both axles simultaneously.
This case was used from 73-79 behind the TH400... also in some models of the "smaller" jeeps. Low Range Unit (2.57:1) was optional in some cases

did it in my 79 j20. Love it, I couldn't find a switch that didn't leak for a long time though so i just plugged one hose into the other for about a year and a half! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

hey guys I was wondering what is the easy way to see if the e-drive is working properly. I can hear the vacuum "swoosh" when I flip it but how do I tell if it is actually working? Thanks in advance.

if you have the part time conversion, get out and try to move the front drive shaft by hand( hubs must be in free position)...if its stock, turn in a tight circle on dry pavement, it'll jerk from the diff not having enough play to allow the front end to turn a tighter radius than the rear end http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

If your light comes on it is engaged. This is assuming that the wire is still on the switch and the bulb is not burnd out. Unless there is a short the bulb will not light if the system is not engaged, if there is a short it will stay on all the time. Of course it will also stay on if the system does not disengage.

Instead of relocating mine I made a new glove box out of copper. Looks pretty kewl, gives a stable mounting surface for the switch and also replaces the worn out paper one.

Thanks for the info Matt ans Jeepbob, the light comes on fine and as far as I can tell its engaged, I was just trying to make sure it was actually working. I'll try the turning thing Matt.
