Which route is better? Gallup to US 666 :( then to Shiprock, up to Cortez and over to Durango? Or Gallup to US 666 :( then to Shiprock, then into Farmington and up to Durango. . . or skip US 666 and go State Route 371 to Farmington and up?
Hmmm? Which is easier on the vapor lock? What should I do to prevent it?

Hmmm? Which is easier on the vapor lock? What should I do to prevent it?Here is how I travel to/from Phoenix area:
- I17 of course
- At Flagstaff, pick up US89
- Pick up US160 near Tuba City
- US160 will bring you into Cortez
From there you have a choice:
1 - US145 thru Telluride to Placerville
- 62 to Ridgeway
- US550 south to Ouray
- this is more direct
2 - US160 on to Durango
- US550 to Ouray
Either way you cross over a pass just over 10,000 feet.
Vapor Lock? What is your engine and carburation?
Check fuel line and see how close it is to the left exhaust manifold. That can be a source of heat. Venting the hood helps too. At the very least, if you want to do something to help vapor lock, an electric fuel pump mounted on the frame rail right in front of the fuel tank. I have seen that do wonders. It has for us.
When Ralph Rogers was here, he ran a new 5/16 fuel line from in front of the tank outside the frame rail to keep it away from the heat.
If you go to the 05 Ouray link in my signature, there is a link to the TX-OK Jeep Club where Don S has a lot of info on Ouray prep along with vapor lock fixes.
Hope this helps!

... The easy way to get to the KOA from Cortez is up 145 through Delores, Rico and Placerville. Then head east on 62 over Dallas Divide to Ridgway then south on 550 to the KOA. A lot less traffic and high Mountain Passes to climb!
... About vapor lock and other high altitude check the links below… Been there, done that!

take 145 from cortez, 550 n of durango was crazy tuesday(5th), like rush hour traffic just nuts. 145 has only one pass and it is an easy one, 550 has three big ups/downs.
Happy Birthday Flint... its just another day gone by, no big deal.
