I am haveing trouble with the trans in the wifes 89 GW. It seems to be solid, no slipping, but it will stay in high gear after bringing it to a stop, or it will go to low but will up shift way to quick so fast that the motor is lugging. It will shift properly if I shift it manualy pull it to low and shift 1, 2, D. as well as down shifting. I have several Trans I could use but if there is an easy fix for this, I would rather do that.

Have the bands been adjusted recently? What about the kickdown linkage? I had this problem on mine when I rebuilt it. Turned out I didn't tighten the kickdown linkage nut at the valve body input shaft and it popped off. If I can find my tranny book, I'll post whatever it lists in the troubleshooting that I haven't already posted. The '89 still used the 727 right?

yup it has the TF727. I figured all the kickdown linkage was for was for the passing gear. As far as the bands go I would have thought it would slip if they were out of adjustment. I don't know much about them, if it was the TH400 I would guess the modulator, but since the TF727 does not have one I am lost. Thanks for the info. ;)

The Kick Down linkage on the 727 can make it do wierd things. I had mine adjusted to loose and it did exactly what you discribed. Also if the spring is gone off of the linkage that can cause you troubles as well.

Yep.

I had to play with my kickdown linkage at the carb after I put on the 4350. It needed some slack because the throttel shaft is more forward on a 4350 then a 2150.

It was doing some strang stuff. And I found out I was already missing the spring for it. The spring looks just like a return spring for the throttel. The Haynes book walks you through it.

Ok great then I will look into that. To be honest I did not think the kickdown linkage would have anything to do with it. I have put a new 1406 on and have not even hooked it up. Still trying to figure out how to hook it all up. Any ideas? Is there a kit for this from edelbrock? ;)

Edelbrock does have a throttle bracket for the AMC. Listed as "AMC Throttle Cable Adapter - 1979 and later #8034" on their web page. It costs about $15.

I modified my existing brackets. Little bend here and there. Then add some spacers on the bottom. Or spend $15.00 and do it the right way. If you find a good way to hook up the cruise, let me know. The way mine is set up, the cruise linkage dangles on top of the throttle linkage.

Found the book! It says under troubleshooting that it could also be a valve body problem, but if your problem just started with the carb swap, I'd say that's probably the cause. Also, if you fix the linkage, do the bands, and it still won't downshift, check the governor pressure. It should read no more than 1 psi at idle not moving. Any more and it won't downshift.

Good Morning! Been following this for a few, since I am about to do my own bands and filter change, where did anyone find the "inch lbs torque wrench"? I also have the 727.

Erix, firstly you'vde got to have the right socket for adjusting the bands, as the adjusting nut is square (not hexagonal). To convert inch-pounds to foot-pounds, just divide by 12.

trssho, you need about 2" more lamp chain to extend the cruise control chain so it will reach the carb linkage. You can attach it any way you see fit at that point, since the mechanisms that operate the cruise control will make up for an imperfect amount of chain slack.
