The inside door opening handle on my 88 GW doesn't spring back when I release it. I heard a "pop" a few weeks ago. I assume it's just a spring that broke. Does anyone know where the spring attaches, near the inside door handle or near the outside door handle closer to the lock? I'd rather not take it all apart if someone can help me out. Also, what does the spring look like? It wasn't in the bottom of the door when I took the panel off. Thanks!

The spring is more than likely on the remote control rod unit probably inside the assembly. That's the part where the handle bolts on and has the rod going back to the latch. The cast part where the rods make 90 degrees is where the spring probably is. Not sure if it can be taken apart(halved) to get inside. Never had to try.

the springs are all in the latch. but what may have happened is that the rod from the handle popped out of the latch arm. there is sposed to a plastic clip that holds it in place. the springs are torsion springs.

I just fixed my 86 GW door. The spring is part of the door handle assembly, I couldn't tell the spring was broken (ie, how the spring tension worked)until I pryed the tabs off and seperated the two halves. I could see the spring was broke then. I bought a used one from a salvage yard.

Thanks guys! I took it apart it was all together. It appears as though the torsion spring rusted/popped of the center rod. So it would never get any tension. I think I can get a spring from my parts rig or I'll swap the whole thing out.
M4203: did you replace just the spring or the assembly. I can't find a good separation point if I was to change out whole thing.

Figured it out guys. My torsion spring was broken, it was a little rusty too. I just seperated the thing, pulled the old one of my parts rig, put 'em together and it's good as new. Just had to be sure the torsion spring orientation was correct. Thanks for the help!
