Does anybody have or know where I can find an evaporator coil for my 78 Chero 401? The mech said mine was shot, and knowing nothing at all about A/C units I have little choice but to believe him. Since my system is empty, can I replace this myself?

I've never tried this place and found it just wondering around the web. But it looks like it might be a good source for all used Jeep Parts. http://www.jwjeep.com/index.html

Try http://billsusedparts.com, and give them a call. I just got a used condensor core in really nice shape for $45, including shipping. Also, the condensor-to-filter/drier tube was on it (a part that is no longer made and must otherwise be fabricated). I'm doing the replacement right now.

They had two other condensors sitting around, so chances are they've got an evaporator core somewhere, though I'm not sure yours would be the same as in my '88 GW. You might also go to http://www.car-part.com and post a request for their affiliates to search for one.

The evaporator is under the dash and generally a pain in the butt to get at, but it's certainly something you can do yourself. If a mechanic has to do a pain-in-the-butt job, guess who gets to pay for it?
