Anyone know where the cat was located on the 78 cherokees? My newest purchase(78 chief) didn't have one, I purchased it with no drivetrain.I just finished installing the motor and trans and am finishing up the exhaust. In ca, it won't pass smog without a cat, so I need to know where this thing was originally mounted. I can't find it in any of my manuals.

It was right on the end of the Y-pipe on my '84 GW.

I am in the same boat as you....78 chero no cat.....it goes on the passenger side, just to the rear of the trans case cross member....when you install it make sure the heat shield is facing up.

Your car may not have been equipped with a cat if it was a 49 state car. My '77 Chero 401v8 is a 49 state car and they were not equipped with cats, at least not in '77. The '77 TSM verifies this. Also,I had no problem passing smog. Most smog check shops seem to know what cars required cats.

to the rear of the cross member? How did you fit it? The drive shaft comes back on one side, and the gas tank sits on the other. I can't see where there would be any room for it. I was going to mount it a few feet after the manifold, near the trans. How much heat does this thing generate?

hhmmm.....on mine it is towards the inside of the frame rail at the rear of the trans case support.....look for lots of heat shields under the vehicle...and the cat is mucho caliente!
all you need is 1" clearance......on mine there is a exhaust bracket on the side of the QT trans case so that should tell you how tight the squeeze is!

You said make sure the heat shield is facing up? I see a heat shield under the vehicle, but the cat doesnt have one. Also, what about the muffler? I was planning on putting my muffler in the spot where the cat goes. Where do you have yours mounted?

The OEM muffler is a round style about 7.5" in diameter and about 24-26" long. Befor I ripped mine off, it was mounted just before the bend to take the the tailpipe up and over the axle. The end of the muffler was about 6" forward of the rear pinion yoke.

What I have been told from some custom exhaust builders is.......cat goes as close to the motor as possible and muffler goes as far away from the motor as possible..
the cat should be double layer on one side and single layer on the other(at least all the ones I have seen are)

My manual shows the cat mounted right in front of the muffler.
