I was reading an excellent book called "Classic 4x4s with a good piece on Binders. I remember almost buying a '67 Travelall. It was ugly, but had some great hardware on it.
The '61-'69 models seemed to be a lot like the early Wags, but the 50's models were much more on the tuck side.
Anybody ever have one of these? And how do they compare to a Wag? Outside of the Binder freaks, there does not seem to be much of a following and they are pretty inexpensive.

Don't know nothing about them. All I know is I've wanted one for the longest time... I will have one, one day, oh yes...

I remember my dad bought a new one in 72. I would say they compare to the suburban more than to a wag. The engines are truck engines, that is they are heavy, durable, and low RPM high torque. They are good trucks, no doubt. The six cylinders were AMC, 232 and 258. The later autos were 727's. Dana 44's on half tons, and 60 on heavyer trucks. They offered a 5spd, one with a granny low and OD, but the granny low close ratio with a 5th of 1:1 is more common. Dana 20 and NP205 transfer cases, mostly good heavy parts. There has been some past posts on IH, might try a search. My folks like the 72 Trav mostly because it had lots of room to haul us all, and plenty of strength to pull the 5000lb travel trailer, and rode smooth and drove nice when empty.

They are much bigger, and usually a couple years behind the Wagoneer in style and comfort. They are kind of the box that a Wagoneer would have been shipped in... ;)
Still, I wouldn't turn one down... :D

The late 69 to 75 were the best ones and were right up with the Wag in every respect. The engines range any where from the 232 & 258 sixes to the IHC 304, 345, 392, and the AMC401 (IHC V400). The beast of the bunch was the 392 which is a true torque monster. You could get D60 front and a D70 rear if you wanted as well a 3,4 or5 speed manuals and 3 spd automatics. The 5 spd could be geared in several combos depending on what you wanted however most were granny low and OD 5th. One neat thing was there were 7 std colors & 13 optional colors. If you did not like those there was 26 more opt colors. If you were still not happy there were 305 more opt colors and if you did not find anything there you could tell them the paint # and they would get it. The binders could also be bought as panel trucks and you could get rear barn doors. My dad sold the first Travelall that listed for more than $10,000 in 72 and that beast had 32's and a winch. In 72 $10,000 was real sticker shock.

I wanted one in the mid '50s. But they were high priced 'cause they were HD. So I bought a 55 binder P.U. ...Salmon pink & put Studebaker cone full-caps on it....   .......ds

Travelalls are neat  I am going to get an IH pickup when my J20 is done. Those are some of the toughest and best looking trucks.

I have long liked the T-alls. I'd still love one, but I'd like one with 4wd(or locked 2wd) and a 6 banger, which doesn't seem to be common. And, yes, the prices have gone high on these as the few people who like them want them. I like the 69-75 style myself.....boxy and ugly, but I love it! Never driven one, but I do like 'em!
Would consider an IH pickup if I found one too, but J-trucks are not only usually more common(if you can say that), and I'm more familiar with 'em. Oh well.....gotta love the "other" independent who made some great rigs themselves!
Take care....

I've never seen an IH product here in the last three years. They rusted even worse than our Wags.

Growing up, Dad bought a brand new 1972 Travelall. The worlds largest station wagon is what we called it. I learned to drive in that thing,
The older ones were about the size of an fsj, but in the '70's, they grew to a little bit larger than a suburban.
My brother worked at a parts counter,,,and he used to say the only thing worse than a Jeep to look up parts for was an IH :D :D tongue.gif

Those were Monsters! On the link below, this guy compares the dimensions with an Expedition - almost the same. 119 inch wheelbase!
