Today I changed out all 4 of my Cr*pusound jenson speakers in my 88 g.wag. In the front doors I put in 3 way 150 watt Pioneer 6x9's. In the back (still not mounted or properly loaded) are 2 way 100 watt Pioneer 6x9's. These are also 4 Ohm speakers as opposed to the 8 Ohm load of the originals. So they would naturally be louder. But I just had to say that the stock jeep radio really drives those speakers extremly well. Once I load the rear speaks I will double my bass response as all the bass is happening in the front doors. Well thats all just had to say I was really impressed with the ability of the stock tape deck to drive some real speakers.

I've been thinking about upgrading the sound in mine as of late. A previous owner, not sure which one since my jeep had been passed around like a cheap ho until it found true love with me, had put in a nice sony CD but only hooked up a couple of front (original I think) speakers in the doors. The rear speakers had completely rotted out from moisture (another problem). I was thinking about 3-ways with a base tube but, it may not be neccessary with all the room in the back which leads me to the question I had in the first place before I meandered off track. How's the base response with your new system?

The bass in the front doors is really dang good, I cut out the existing metal to make room for the 6x9's and when I put em in I first put in a double layer thick plastic(like a heavy plastic bag). This waterproofs the back of the speaker and helps load it. Also I installed the speaker grill onto the inner door panel like the stock ones were. but didnt cut out the metal trim piece so although the high end components are completly exposed, the woofer part of the 6x9 is partially covered on the upper portion. This all cause's a fairly good resonance. When I fade the stereo to the rear 6x9's there is little or no bass cause they are just sittin there on the floor unloaded. I think I'm goin to make paricle board box's for them and waterproof the box's. This will make them hump. Even with only effectivly half of the bass I'm goin to have, It is quite good.. and rattles the h*ll out of the door before the speaker starts to clip out.. once the backs are done.. I will decide if I need a sub or subs.Mabye I will scan the photos I snapped today and post em ..

Ok notice how the metal trim of the inner door panel (chrome with woodgrain in middle) continues thru the speaker area) didnt want to cut that up. And it made a great place to drill two small holes for screws to hold the grill in place. Second one is just stuff from the rear.

I've been wondering how to get bass out of this vehicle for some time, since there's not much room for a box. I've thought about putting shakers in the backs of the front seats.
Anyway, check out the photos of this GW on eBay. It looks as if there's a subwoofer mounted in the right rear panel:

Thats a nice looking wag.. although I would say the carpet was house carpet hacked in. in the back anyhow. looks like a large sub back there.. I am planning to replace my soft side panels in the back with heavy guage metal panels with doors or some kind of access panels built in. This will be a rigid side wall for the cargo area and still allow me to use that side space. And ultimatly provide a strong mounting point for a rear enclosure for my 6x9's. Not sure what this enclosure will be yet but it will be a dense non resonating material like particle board. Gonna try and tune those rear speaks\box and get the most out of em.

Cool Clark! I put some 6x9 4-ways in my doors a couple of months ago and it rocks. I just drilled two holes (used two existing ones) bolted some 2 inch hardware staps to the speakers and bolted the straps to the door frames. By the looks of it you mounted yours a little higher and a little forward of where I mounted mine. There is plenty of room there, that's for sure. I pulled off my broken stock grills, screwed on some 5 1/4 grills over the existing holes and was done. Most of the woofer is actually covered by door panel but as long as the panel is securely fastened I don't foresee any problem. I have a little Blaupunkt 25x4 watt cassette deck that sounds great up front. I can actually feel the bass. I stuck the best remaining stock speakers in back for now and it sounds okay faded about 3/4 to the rear. I'm gonna' do my rears soon too so keep us informed on your customizing.

Here's an update.

This is how my speaks are mounted right now, they arent loaded right just open in the back. I cut the stock bracket in half, in this pic the speaker is held by a bolt at the top and the right mount part just has an allen wrench stuck thru the hole to hold it up while I was sizing things up and there was a good song on. On this side I screwed up and didnt leave quite enough of the bottom portion of the bracket to make the lower right hole have a place to bolt onto the bracket. On the driver side I left more of it there and have two holes bolted to that black bracket.

The cargo panel with the hole cutout for the new speaker grill, I ran out of polaroids at this point so couldnt take pic's of the finished product at this point.. I eventually am going to replace these soft panels with metal. Then I will make a more permanent mount and box for the rears
