I finally got the brakes to work so I figured I would see if I could back it up and go forward, since I still have a few things to hook up, well it went back just fine but would not go forward. I figured I must have low fluid so I checked it and it was low. Added more and tried again, this time it would not go reverse or forward with out making a BAD grinding sound and a weird clicking sound. To make it move just a little I have to get the RPM's maxed out just to make it crawl a few feet. Could this be the fact that there is not enough fluid in the torq converter yet? Once again I thank all of you for helping me put my Wag back together. I am almost done and this has been a great learning experience which I hope to share with all in the future.

Are you talking about checking\adding trans fluid? Im not familiar with what stage you are in of your rebuilding.. has this truck been apart for a while? Was this a trans you were already using and worked before? sounds like a weird prob. did you get the torque converter properley engaged to the multishaft?? (correct me if i am wrong folks please! I am from the chevy world (recently converted) and am speaking of the way you have to work the converter into place by turning it both directions a few times while pushing it in place).. uh. other wise I dont have enough experience with the actual workings of an auto tranny to diagnose this.. I have cooked a few trannys that had similar symptoms and have had to drive home in reverse in one case (luckily i had any movement). but these were all old worn units that were just "finally dying". the more info you can provide on your situation the better.. as I said before if I am just not up to date on your project enough to be on the right track let me know Im just guessin at this point. (are there other post's that pertain to you'r progress of rebuilding your rig that i could bone up on?)

hope i can help.

Hey Porkchop if your qt has a low range maybe its not enguaged all the way. My Wagoneer popped into neutral once when a went over a railroad track, I tried to enguage it but I was going a bit to fast. What a horrorable noise!

im also wondering if this tranny worked before. did you drive the parts truck at all? what did you do to the tranny,if anything? new seals?pull the pan? the th400 will fill in park,and shouldnt take very long to do it. i hate to say it,but it does sound like youve got something going on inside the tranny.

get it to the point that youre 100%sure the tranny is full. start it up and run it thru the gears. let it idle for a few seconds.now try yo move. the torque convertor should be full.

oooooohhhhhhh- do you have both front and rear driveshafts installed? if not you may not be in E drive. trying to move a quadra trac without both driveshafts,and not in E drive can certainly fool you into thinking that theres a problem it the tranny. the clutches may be in good enough shape to grab alittle and move the rig at higher rpm. as was also mentioned, be sure its positively engauged in high or low range.

as a last resort,id pull the pan and change thre fluid,filter again and see if that makes any difference. it should be possible to use air pressure to check the operation for the clutches and front/rear servos,but youll probably have to pull the valve body to do it(not real sure on a th 400).

let us know what happens...

Well I feel pretty stupid, but not knowing the QT that well I guess I have an excuse http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif Thank you very much scotty! I did not have the front drive shaft in. I have run without a front drive shaft many a times so I did not think it would make a whole lot of difference. Boy is this QT a different animal. I will have to read up more on this before I post about it again. Well it is running fine now from what I can tell by going up and down my drive way about 25 feet. I need to hook up my steering before I can go anywhere else. I think I might have a problem there since this frame is a little different than the '79. The new power steering box sits a little lower than the original box and my draglink hits the tierod in a bad way. I am looking at ways of fixing this now and should be able to steer tomorrow evening http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif

Well once again, thank you scotty and the rest of you for all the help. Once I get this all done I will wright a nice post about all that I have had to do to make this happen. For all of you out there thinking about this, it is not a "bolt right in" project. Just a side thought.
