I had to remove my transfer case to replace some leaking gaskets and am having a bear of a time reinstalling it!Unfortunately I do all of my work alone(well my 2 daughters 7&8 run the jack for me sometimes)....is there a trick to balancing that thing on a jack and getting it up there in place.....do i have to remove the 4-low pumpkin to reinstall?

what is the easiest/best way to get this thing up there...

thanks a bunch guys!

peace....................BartG

What type of T-case? Maybe there are some out there with a trick up their sleeve... I sat my QT (with the lo range unit attached)on my chest, slid under and pressed it up and on the shaft.... heavy but manageable.

helps to have a friend (an adult) helping you. ive bench pressed a few trannys up into place while my helper puts in a few bolts and snugs it up to the engine.. find a big friend and have em be the bench press guy.. and you throw in a few bolts..

He he he well its not so much of a straigt full on bench press but you kinda use your whole body.. legs everything (keep in mind im nuts hahaha) feels like a big bench press though.. (human tranny jack). mabye its a leverage thing.. im 6'2.5" 220lbs. hehe But seriously folks, sometimes you can put a big thick piece of board on a floor jack so that the thing your lifting doesnt ride in the "cup" but on a flat surface. and you can move it around better.. might have to put the jack on a few boards too if it wont go high enough. I am looking forward to dropping my 229 out of my g.wag to replace with a 208. cant wait to see if i drop it into my face or what hahahaha. (not really)

P.S. never put in any tranny bigger than a turbo 350 (no 400's)

i am the same way-i do almost all my work alone.everyone wants your help, but when you actually need the favor in return theyve always got something else to do... http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/rolleyes.gif

i hate to say it,but ive always used the bench press method as well.ive installed my 219,207(very,very light),208 and the dana 300 by myself.ive never had any luck with the jack method for transfer cases-theyre shaped to funny to keep stable in the position that you need them, even with multiple friends trying to help keep it balanced. you just slide under there, wiggle it onto your chest, grit your teeth and give a big heave-ho.

just dont let it fall on your head-that would be very, very bad. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif

(haha!!!) That's a good one!!! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif Hey Veepster... I'm not that big... 5'7" 175lbs and Griswald is right. You tend to use your whole body... depending on hwo high you have your rig sitting. Yes... it will go on with the lo range attached. Be carefull when sliding it on the shaft... those double seals on the forward end can tear easy. One thing... if your adapter plate (part with the x-member mount) isn't on your QT, I highly suggest you put it on the QT 1st. Much easier of a an install. I hope you have no fluid in it... this makes it MUCH heavier and not as easy to lift. Make sure that if it is empty, you put a quart thru the fill plug on the Lo range case, otherwise you may run it dry until the chain slings it up into it thru the journals.

You can lay it flat on a board(yokes horizontal), line up the shaft and roll the jack into it carefully. Seat the adapter plate onto the tranny. The plate lip that is around the bearing will align the tranny to the adapter plate... slowly lower the the jack while rotating the QT into position. Start a bolt and your there! Hope this helps...

PS... Maybe the gym should supply trannys and QT's instead of weights to bench press..right, Clark?..... http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif just kidding http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/wink.gif

heheh yeah.. well I actully (although always interested in mechanical things) am only a mechanic out of neccessity, (poor musician, want something done right do it yourself)be honest with ya I consider myself somewhat broken\out of shape. from years of motocross abuse (raced quads open class) and as you can image at almost 6'3" 220lbs "the bigger they are the harder they fall" not to mention having a broken scaphoid for about 6 years (scaphoid is in the wrist, left in my case. once again .. motocross) and having it surgically repaired in recent years.. it is that "go for it, bench press that tranny" thinking that has literally in the last month or two finally gotten me back into decent shape and feeling better every day.. honestly having bought this FSJ and having this forum of info to help keep interested. has contributed greatly to my recovery\health.. Drawing lifeforce from my jeep..

Glad to hear the "FSJ fever" has another good side of healing abilities... besides making you smile as you empty your pockets. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif

I hear ya Clark... DIY to get it done right. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/wink.gif I have always been a "motorhead" of sorts. Started with my dad when I was 14 on my first car... '68' Camaro Z28 (LONG gone). It has since been a driving force in my life to learn as much as I can on everything I own. If it works... I rip it apart to see how and if I can make it better. Innovasion runs thru my veins!!! I have done more mods on my beast than any other vehicle I have ever had. I have learned a great deal from the Forum and have met alot of great people here I hope to meet in 2002. OK... I'm going to stop being "mushy".... I find myself going to the forum often during the day to see who I can help... It feels good to pass on the knowledge I have gained and also learn in the process of things I don't know about...

MAN, I LOVE THIS FORUM!!! (mushy again)

"We can rebuild him...we can make him stronger." Is it the six million dollar man, or the average FSJ? Or is it the six million dollar FSJ? I'm associating with a bunch of cyborgs!

Here's a fun one for all of you to try: I lived alone in the middle of a swamp for awhile (got a free house--if you could call it that--along with a groundskeeping job I once had) and got the idea to try to swap out rear ends by myself. Parked the semi-good FSJ next to the parts FSJ and went to work with a rolling floor jack and a four by four, not to mention the trailer hitch and spare tire and extra bottle jack. What I did was moronic, but it actually worked: I dragged the good axle under the project truck, shoved the spare under the trailer hitch, laid the four by four across the spare, shoved the bottle jack upside-down between the hitch and spare and rolled the axle over the four by four. The spare gave me a higher leverage point to work with, and the floor jack kept the axle suspended until I could fit the u-bolts around it and start wrenching.

Sorry for the bandwidth, but I was proud of myself that day. And it only took seven hours!

If you bench pressed that axle in to place... you I would DEFINITELY not want to meet in an alley!!! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif Good job with the innovation using what you had... sometimes that what is takes to jet the job done.

I made an 9" extension of 1/2 plate steel to fit on my hi-lift jack to jack my rig from the frame instead of the bumper... it works great... but don't foreget to chalk the wheels when you don't have a driveshaft... I almost started a new construction project on my house after my rig tipped off the rear jackstands (10-ton jacks at 3/4 extension) while jacking the front. She tipped off the jacks, bounced and rolled about 2 feet and hit the house. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif Busted the door jam, some stucco and the wall flexed enuf to move the kitchen base cabinets 1.5"from the wall!!! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif

Needless to say I won't be doing that again!!! Lesson learned! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/wink.gif
