My GW also has a red fluid leak between the xfer case and the tranny. Pretty severe. The xfer case was just put in a couple of weeks ago. It was a non-leaking case, but high-mileage, so I had the seals replaced before I had it put in.

Which is more likely with 177k miles on the drivetrain—a leaking tranny or boogered-up new seals? Any good way to tell the difference without yanking them? The fluid seems to be coming from the joint between the two.

Also, is there supposed to be a seal between the two such that fluid fills the void between them? If so, I'm suspecting it was left out, and hence the leak.

Please enlighten me. I WILL win this war against the leaks!!!!

Odds are it's the rear seal in the tranny unless they buggered up the new seal in the transfer case? If your leak is as severe as you say, it should be pretty easy to tell which is leaking just by checking the fluid levels in both.

I agree and to add to that there is a seal of sorts between the two units but you probably would be worse off not knowing it was leaking. When I rebuilt my unit I replaced the rear seal in the trans for giggles.

since the tranny and xfer both take atf,it realy dont matter much if one leaks if the 2 are sealed together. i went to ajeep dealer looking for a gasket, since my tranny guy had given me a gasket awhile back,i knew that they existed.the guy at the parts counter thought i was crazy-called over a couple of techniciansmand none of them had ever seen a gasket between the tranny and xfer case.moreover, there is supposed to be alittle weep hole so that youll know if one or the other is leaking. i explained that it is constantly exposed to larges amounts of mud,and that i was worried about it gettig up in there and destroying the seals, and possible water contamination if the seals did go bad. they didnt seem to think that it would be a terrible big deal for the cavity between the tranny and xfer to fill up with fluid.so i sealed them together with silicone. now, tho, im not using a new process case anymore, and it may be bad for gear oil from the 300 to get into the tranny. i hope that never happens...

anyway, i would let it leak untill one or the other is low enough to tell which seal you need to replace, then use silicone selant between the 2 when you put it back together.
