i am replacing the t18a in my 82 j20 with a 727. i seem to remember awhile back a post something about pilot busings in the 360 crank,or something, when swapping in an auto. does anyone have a clue? do i need to do something,or can i just bolt on the auto flexplate and roll with it?

A 360 with manual trans. has a pilot bushing in the end of the crank and an auto one doesnt. You'll probably have to take it out which wont be too hard. Then everything should bolt right on.

do you need to remove the pilot bushing for simply for torque convertor clearance? or is there some other sort of reason? i trial fit the convertor before installing it in the tranny, and it fit,so i went ahead and put it all together. a friend of mine installed a 258 into his xj cherokee with an auto trans, and we left the pilot bushing in his crank.it didnt seem sot hurt anything in his case,so hopefully it will all be happy...

Not sure, I havent had one of these apart in a while so I don't remembr if the converter comes in contact with it or not. But I'm guessing it will work fine since your friends 258 works good.

The 400T uses a t/converter bushing that is only about a 1/16" thick, the 727 does not,the 727 t/conv. WILL NOT fit with the bushing in place. I know, I tried to fit a 79 360/400T motor into my 81 that has a 727 for an hour and a half before I noticed the bushing!
