The 4WD indicator light is stuck on in my 88 GW. I checked the vacuum to the mode motor and it appears to be good. I had someone watch the mode rod while I switched the selector between 2WD and 4WD and it was moving. If I manually move the mode rod with a wrench the indicator will go out until I begin driving.I hosed the area with WD40 and did a visual inspection and it looks OK. Is it possible to have the 2 vacuumlines backwards and cause this? There is a green one and a red one.The red is connected on the rear of the mode motor and the green is connected somewhere on the top. Does this matter or is this right?Could weak vacuum cause this or could the motor be weak? I measured the length of the rod when in 2WD and it is close to what the manual says it should be. Any help would be much appreciated.

Funny this came up again.. Today I had a mini victory!.. For the first time I got my transfercase to shift from 2wheel to 4wheel on its own under vac power.. heres how.. I got under there with my little "Mightyvac II" hand vacuum pump and put it on one side of the diaphragm and cranked up a lot of vacuum.. and also was hosing down the penetrant the whole time.. i used my big pair of vice grips to move the linkage back and forth the full range of its movement.. againts the vacuum pressure of my little vac gun.. eventually i worked it free enough to where the vacuum alone would cause the linkage to return to the direction the thing was pulling.. and then i hooked up to the other side of it. and pulled down like 25 inches of vac.. and worked the linkage over and over until this vacuum would cause the linkage to return to home under vac power.. then hooked it all back up and test drove it.. Sure enough I can now switch from 2wheel to 4wheel without climbing under the truck with vice grips.. Yeeee Haaaa!!! (I also changed the rear u-joints while I was at it).. and you will be happy to hear that my Green vac line is in the rear and the other in the front of the can. that is, the red line plugs into the front of the vac thingy (towards front of truck) and the green line plugs into the rear side of it(at a 90 degree angle to the centerline of the thingy, so out the rear\top).

If you could magically pass thru walls and float yourself into position so you were looking right at the linkage of the transfer case, the inner shaft(smaller lever) is the 2wheel\4wheel selector, the larger outer shaft is the Hi\Neutral\Low selector.. if you were looking at it in this way. looking from the driver side of the t-case at it, the shaft should be turning counter-clockwise to shift into 4wheel drive. so if you are under the case with a big pair of square jaw vice grips you would be pulling the lever back towards the rear of the truck..

It looks like I'll try to work it free as "Sparky" did. Clark where did you get the hand vacuum pump? I just have one thing that I don't understand ,once I manually put it in 2WD why won't it stay,or am I just changing the indicator only?
Thanks again! I beleive it is the NP229.

You can get the hand pumps at any auto parts store. I saw them at autozone and checkers.
