ITSALONGSTORY...so heres the short version - I read an ad for a 77 cherokee that stated he had the QT with a 2x2 conversion kit installed. I've never heard of such an animal for a QT...can anyone enlighten me about this 'kit'?

Well, it would actually be a '4x2' kit (4 wheels, 2 of them driven). MileMarker makes a part-time conversion for the QT. It replaces the drive cones with something (anyone?) and uses locking hubs. 4WD is engaged with the e-drive vacuum switch.

4 cylinders, less than adequate for a car half its size
Crappy rear disc brakes, class-action lawsuit pending

Some other junk not worth mentioning
As Jason said it prolly has the MM part-time conversion kit in it so it's not in full-time 4WD all the time.

Thanks Guys!...I appreciate the lesson! Now, any thoughts on reliability of this kit?

No problem...
the reliability issues ssem to be good... only 2 people I know of had some parts they needed to replace after a few years of running... one guy runs 42" swampers (Above the Law) that should say ALOT for the strength factor for normal 33's or so.
They are easy to install as well... no need to remove the whole case....just the back half..best to replace the chain while you're there.... about 2 hours works total. I haven't done it yet...but maybe soon...stil debating on my swap to a dana 18...
They do sell the kit in a 16% overdrive... but I don't recommend it... it reduces EVERY GEAR by 16%, not just the final drive since it's AFTER the tranny....my .02 worth....

Ultra reliable it seems. My QT w/MM kit has 175,000 on it and works just fine.

RB I really have to wonder about the durability of a D18 and large tires. I have seen these things ripped in two by a stock 227 v6 with 30's on a glass bodied CJ.

I have conversed with Scotty on this same issue... there seems to be alot of conficting reports on the durability for the 18. The one thing I do know is there were 3 sizes of intermediate shafts .75", 1" and 1.25"....The larger being the stronger. I tend to believe the D18 will be a better unit for being gear driven rather than my chain driven QT for the amount of torque going thru it. The Dana 20 is also an option...both are strong, but the D18 has both outputs on the pass side which wuold match my offset rears. The Dana20 guts alos will fit in the 'right' Dana18 from what I gather. Ther only drawback between the 18 and the 20...the 18 uses all the gearing to drive the rear, thus having a pass side output for the rear where as the 20 runs directly off the tranny output shaft.
This is still lurking in my head... nothing set in stone yet...thanks for the input...
