I just bought a 84 GW for parts for my 88 GW.
The 84 has the Dana 20 in the rear. Is the Dana 20 better than the Dana 44? Why did AMC switch to running the Dana 44 in the rear?

Thanks

Actually it's an AMC 20. Dana 20 is a transfer case.

IIRC, the shafts are a little bigger on the D44, and the ring gear's thicker on the AMC20. Strength is about the same.

The AMC20 has a bad rep because the ones in CJs had 2-piece axleshafts that broke easily, and let the wheel get away from the Jeep. The ones in SJs have 1-piece shafts, and the wheel stays attached if the axle breaks.

If you don't know what all those numbers mean, you shouldn't be here.

Ops! So, does the AMC 20 in my 84 GW have the one piece axle shaft?

Yep.
