Hi all,
Since there is always a lot of dicussion here on x-cases and specifically the QT I thought I'd give those of you new to QT equipped rigs a quick heads up.
The front driveshaft with the CV joint(Cardan) is prolly the most neglected part on any FSJ. The CV joint requires a needle tip adapter to get grease into the center of the joint. It's about $4 at any parts store...BUY ONE.
Dealers, lube shops and some owners generally neglect to grease this joint either due to stupidity, lack of concern or laziness.
Reason I mention the importance of this is that if the CV joint lets go while you're going down the road...and this does happen. The shaft will destroy the front of the transmission...as in "knock a large hole in the AT case" http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif
Greasing the CV is critcal on all FSJ's with the CV joint(most if not all FSJ's have'm) but on the non-QT rigs I don't think the shaft will reach the trans if it lets go but I'm not sure. Best have a look see under your rig and you decide http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif
Keep that CV joint greased folks. It matters. If it's making any kind of clunk, growl, vibration etc rebuild in "now".

Good "point", Joe. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif Mine was neglected for many years and I found out it was bad during a trouble shooting rampage for vibes and grinds in the front axle about a year and a halg ago. IT was binding and coming apart as it rotated (cups around the center ball). Needless to say, I took it in to have it rebuilt to supposedly "good shop" and got screwed to the tune of $252 which included a 1" lengthening of the tube. It lasted 3 months and disintigrated! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/mad.gif and the A**h**le wouldn't warranty his work!!!

Just be sure to bring your driveline fixes to a reputable shop for a quality job WITH a warranty.

Oh yeah... I almost foregot....FYI MAX operating angle (full droop of suspension) of a factory CV should not exceed 24 degrees... if it does... kiss it goodbye!!!

just wanted to agree that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pund of cure".its definately easier to work on stuff at home ,than be stranded on the road or in the woods when it explodes. while youve got that grease gun out, dont forget the slip joints on the driveshafes, the tierods, drag link, and the rest of the u joints.

also wanted to say that i wish i had come up with the name "river beast" first... http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif i absolutely love driving thru water! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif the deeper, the better...

My 79 TSM states that ujoints are to be replaced as units, not rebuilt. Is this just a ploy to sell more parts?

Scotty,

I Thought of a name, since you like "deep water"... how bout "Ness" for the Lochness Monster... it's prowling around out there somewhere.... or "Gator" something along those lines...

I am a nice guy but can't give up my identity... sorry.... I "live" at the Colorado and Gila Rivers. They meet about 6 miles from my house and is a GREAT recreational area camping, 4x4, quads cookouts and just plain parties are all going on there.. thats where I got the name... all the frequenters of the rivers watched my stock rig grow into what it is now and rightfully named her for me....

In your case Todd where you needed it lengthened I agree but if you just need the crosses in the CV joint replaced it's a pretty easy process. There's a write up in the TECH section on this. Not much different than repacing conventional single u-joints.
