Button in glovebox?

Well, I have a button near the latch that gets pressed when the glovebox is closed. I would figure it is for a glovebox light but there is no light or place for a light in it. What up wit dat?

I'm not sure if things are different for your 83 but my glovebox light bulb screws into the back of that button thing.

No wonder that light always comes on! I mean always! I was starting to wonder!
