View Full Version : Axel swaping questions: WT axels under a NT wag.

I've located a 78' J-10 near me with D44's/4:10/4:11's/T-18a/D20 and I propose to swap the axels into my 88' GW.
Will these work? I know the axels are wider, but I've also heard that the J's rear axel is even wider than a WT Cherokee's. Also, are the J's spring pads in the same spot as my Wags...or will I be moving stuff.
If this will not work, I found a 75-76 Ford F-250...will this have D60's F/R?
Thanks for any help,

the only problem i would see is you would have to swap the whole driveline in order to use the front axle, the difs changed from pasenger to drivers side in 1980,as far as the rear end scence you have a lift i dont see a problem with width, you would have to trim the fenders to get rull articulation or do the spring over with that setup to get more lift, what i would do is swap it all,the t-18/20 and axles, spring over, trim if needed.as far as the ford front end being a 60,only if its extended cab from my understsanding, you can also look on the housing ,where the webing conects to the dif, left side i think,it will have either a 44 or 60 stamped in the housing, you could use the ford axles and keep your present trany and transfercase,im sure someone else will chim in with more imput...

Oh ya, forgot to mention I picked up a couple Dana 300's so the pass side drop won't be a problem :D

if you do this setup i know someone who would buy the t-18/20 combo from you if you want to sell it.

I say go for it. I love the looks of WT axles under GW.

The 300 swap would be easier and I had a link of someone that did the whole sha-bag but I can't find it. Guess it's your preference of auto vs. stick.

The J-truck axles are slightly larger than a WT. I am almost sure the springpads will be the same(someone will correct me if I am wrong) The D300 will bolt to your existing 727 tranny and the passenger drop axle from the J-truck will work just fine with the D300. You may have some exhaust problems with the pass drop but that is easily remedied. I installed a 78 360 into my 88GW and the oil pan was slightly different and required the exhaust to be tweaked, so I am just guessing that the exhaust will need to be tweaked on yours also for the front shaft to clear. I have considered this exact same D300 swap in my 88 to get rid of the 229. I have NT axles from a 78 parts wag that has a pass drop :D

The spring perches on the rear axle will have to be relocated inward as the J truck frames are wider. If you want to sell the T18/D20 combo, I would be intersted. The F250 prolly not have the D60 frt and should have a 9 inch rear end.
D300 are easy to come by because they have the weak output shaft (this can be fixed) and can not be flat towed without modification. I got one in the shed that was given to me.

The nine inch ford rear was not offered in F-250's. Only full floaters were installed in F-250's. 75-76 F250's would have a Dana 60 rear with a Dana 44 front. 78-79 F250 Supercab's were the only F250's to ever offer a Dana 60 front.
The nine inch was installed in F150's in the 70's along with a front 44. The F150 44's also were coil sprung, whereas the F250's 44 was leaf sprung.

Well, that is news to the F250 4x4(77) that is in my driveway, I have never seen a D60 with a removable center section.

Bob,
Could a PO possibly have swapped the 9 inch in your F250? I have never seen a 8 lug 9 incher.

Totally possible, there were some 8 lug 9"ers that were used in the late 60's to early 70's 1 ton vans.

every f250 ive ever looked at had a 60 in the rear, ive only seen the 9" under the f150. but then, ive prolly only looked under a dozen or so f250s.
to add to the confusion,i got a d60 from a non-supercab f250. it had a plow, dont know if the front end was special order,or a PO install. but its definately a d60 smile.gif
hard to make generalizations sometimes, the way things get swapped around.it would be funny to watch someone trying to figure my rig out if he happened upon it in a junkyard in 10 years :D not that my rig will ever end up in a junkyard of course  ,but it would be funny-hardly anything about my rig is as it should be

My F250 had a 9", but only because the PO sacrificed the 3/4T drivetrain for his Bronco-on-44s project.
Scotty, everything on your rig is as it should be! ;) ('cept maybe the dash wiring...)
