Does anyone know if the 727 trans from a very early 80s wagoneer with a 6 cylinder fit a 79 360? Iwant to replace the th400 and I found vey clean one in a u pick your part yard.

Rudy, it should but it's not a "direct bolt-in" nothing is...You'll be dealing with spacers, transmission/x-case mounts etc.
The first thing you need to find out is if it's really a 727. It's assumed that all 80 and up w/AT's had the 727 but not so. That's true only for the 360 w/AT's. If the FSJ ran the 258 it depended on what the axle gears were. With the stock 2.73 gears the 258 will have the 999 trans behind it(lighter duty version of the 727). Only if the rig had the optional 3.31 gears did the 258 have the 727 behind it.
You also need to remove the crankshaft insert that's in a 360 crank that had a TH400 behind it. If you don't you'll eat the new trans. Something about starving the front pump or such? I haven't done this swap but have talked with folks that have and didn't remove the insert and the 727 went south... http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif
Just my opinion here but if you're looking for a new trans for your 79/360/FSJ either get yours rebuilt or find another TH400. It's a tougher trans than the 727. Not knocking the 727 cause it's a decent trans but it ain't a TH400 http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/wink.gif

I think -joe is right.

Keep the TH-400. Thier great, and replacement/aftermarket parts are plentiful.

the real question is whay do you want to replace the th400? if its simply that your trans is bad,and you happened to find the 727, every one is right-its not really worth the effort or expense of adapting a 727 to a quadra trac. search alittle further,or have your th400 rebuilt.

if you are wanting to swap t cases and use a circular bolt pattern new process case or a dana 300 instead of the quadra trac, youre on the right track.im sure that you also know that all the new process jeep cases had a driver side output,so to use one of these youll alsop need to swap the front axle.

so yes,the trans will bolt to the wngine, and i think even use the same flywheel(727 for 360 vs 258-not same flywheel as for th400). HEY JOE- same part #s for 258 and 360 with 727? but no,the trans will not bolt to the t case,so if youre keeping the q trac stick with the th400.

the d20 will not bolt to a 727 without an aftermarket adapter and tailshaft.hope youve got that stuff in place allready...

Hi Rudy(s),
Like I said earlier I haven't done the 727 into a previously th400 equipped 360 so I don't remember what gets eaten if you don't remove the insert. It's either the converter or the front pump on the tranny? BUT the insert does need to be removed for the 727 to work.
Try looking through the archives of the FSJ-list somewhere on this site. There was a pretty good thread on this about a year or so ago after a couple of folks "didn't" remove the insert http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif
