Lately Ive noticed a disturbing clunking sort of grind or movement of some kind from the rear of my rig when I take off from a stop (especially under a high torque takeoff on a hill or quick takeoff) seems to happen more when I turn left on a takeoff. Ive checked my rear U-joints and they are tight. but tonight I layed on the ground and rocked the rig back and forth and watched the rear end.. There was a kinda weird noise and the whole diff housing kinda turns back and forth a bit. Do ya suppose that under the power of the drivetrain, this mabye turning so much that this is what I am feeling\hearing? P.S. my springs are pretty shot, the little metal bands that wrap around the packs are all broken and barely hanging there. and you can see light thru the leaves except where the ubolts clamp them together of course. They are also really saggy, they look like a relax'd letter M more than a smile.

gris, is diff goin side to side or up + down? ever driv a pu w/o the bed? peekat the r/e?. you accelerate a n' punkin nosedives,back off and it noses up. or vice versa. this was a '56 ford when i was in hs,back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, according to my dotter.anyway up+down is normal travel.beside the sh**metal keepers they're plastic rubbing thingees that cut down on the metal to metal rubbing. if all that stuff is shot than you could have quite a racket going. the holy exh drowns it out on my rig.

It is up and down movement.. I know that some of that is normal but ive never observed one moving that much just from rocking it back and forth.. wish i could mount a little camera under there and make it do it hahahha..

You said the keepers were not holding the leafs together anymore.... hmmmmm.... under a load with worn springs and busted keepers the pinion may be wrapping upward and causing the rear of the leafs to separate and "slap" together after the load is lightened. Also check your rear shackle bushings... they will give alot of play and maybe twisting abit under a load in a corner and binding the side of the shackle up against the mount... look for freshly scared metal...uhhh.... check the u-bolts... amke sure they are at about 110 ft lbs. Check for a cracked or broken leaf... I've seen that happen before,too...

I think the reason I may be noticing it now is because I have finally gotten my engine running good enough to where I can actually take off fast enough to cause whatever is happening.. Im getting underneath there tommorow and yanking on things.. mabye I will figure it out.

clark, what's zzzzzzzz up? I replaced the spring pads on my wag and got 3/4" lift out of doing it. The light between the leafs may be normal if the pads are good or if you even have them at all.

I was following a pickup the other day and noticed that the springs opened up about three inches when he took off. As he slowed down the gap decrease and closed back while breaking. I didn't realise how much the springs moved like that so I catch myself watching spring movement quit often along with trying to identify what kind of lifts people are using. I guess it's important to have good leaf parts so now I need to order the leaf clamps for my wag which are in bad shape.

Still working on my body lift. I decided to change the week body mounts also so am waiting for them to arrive.
