Has anyone swapped out the Q track for a better T-case like a np205? My case just exploded. Man that chain is wimpy looking. I came accross what I think was a dana 20 but it has the front pumpkin on the drivers side. For now I pulled a used Q track from a junkyard wagoneer and it has a hi low range unit on it. I still will have to replace the chain.

First of all...Welcome to the Forum!!! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif
Second...you never mentioned the year of the FSJ http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/confused.gif...since you said "Q Track"...I will assume it is a Quadratrac full-time unit... and by your ID, a 79 model http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/wink.gif
The TH400 in front of the QT unit is specific to ONLT the QT unit. It has a 10 pline shaft that only mate to the QT. If you plan on replacing th QT... you need to either find some other Jeep specific tranny for application of a Dana 20, find a used output shaft from a TH400 for a Dana 20 application to be installed in your existing tranny and use a Dana 20 or find an adapter plate (if you don't have one) that will allow a GM bolt pattern to mate a GM style tranny to the back of your block (along with the flywheel spacer)...then you can use a 205...but you run into modifiying your driveshafts to attach from the 205 to the diffs.
The QT units are very strong and durable if maintained properly. The chain is, by far, not "whimpy". You probably slung the chain thru the case because is was stretched WAY too far. In my opinion, rebuild the QT and replace the chain, seals and gskets. There are many write-ups on the QT in the tech section of the IFSJA site. Read and learn all you can on it so you know what to look for when going thru the cases. good luck.

It's a 79 wagoneer/360 2bbl/ th400. I bought it with the transfer case rebuilt two years ago with low miles (on the T Case) and then BOOM!!!! Wow pretty impressive explosion. Scarry too since the chain locked it up in the fast lane.

i know that no jeep applications used a driver side front dana 20.if it is that,it may be a ford(?) or some other application.
as i see it you have 4 options:
1) fix and reinstall a quadra trac.ill agree with riverbeast that the QT has an undeserved bad rep. your explosion is not typical of one that has been rebuilt and uses the proper lubricant. you can also install a part time kit and have a cool 2wd low.
2) find a good th400 and dana 20 and swap the whole thing(it was available from the factory-but very rare),or swap the adapter and tailshaft into your good th 400.
3) fid a gm th400 and 205,and swap the tailshaft and adapter into your amc th400 so you can bolt a gm 205 right to it.
4)swap in a 904 or 727 so you can use a dana 300.to use the 727 you will need a minimum of 4 inches of suspension lift so that the front driveshaft doesnt hit the tranny.
hope this helps

I may not have been a dana20 on the junker but it was on the drivers side. That asumption came from my friend who is more familiar with FSJs but he said he maybe wrong. It had a six in it too. I think the Q-track only came on V8s.
Since I already bought the used Q-track I will put a new chain (good one too) and see how it goes. I think the shop put a cheap chain on it to begin with.
By the way has anyone installed the milemarker 2wd kit? It has an overdrive and that soulds like it would help milage.
I just wonder what it costs and how difficult it was to install.
But I really like the jeep since it's roomy and my whole family and our mountain bikes fit. And yes it's towed may Dodge Power Wagon home a few times. But thats what happens when you go balls out in the mud with a built 440 ( but we don't all fit in the Dodge).

No, q-tracks were available with sixes too.

sorry RM126.
Now that I read my post it does look confusing.
I pulled the used Qtrack from a v8 wagoneer at the bone yard. It had the Hi Lo range unit but my waggie didn't so it was a added bonus.
But next to it was another wagoneer with a sixer and a transfer case that had the front output shaft on the drivers side.
My know it all buddy thought it was a Dana 20. And I though hey if I could install that one or a stronger np205 I wouldnt have to worry of the chain busting in the fast lane in L.A. freeways on my way to work.
Since I never saw a dana 20 I assumed he was right. You see before I bought my 79 Waggie I only owned Dodge trucks so if it was not a NP205 or NP203 it was some unknown mutant life form. On my Dodge the np203 never busted the t/c chain even after 150,000 miles.

if it was a FSJ with a driver side diff,it was an 80 or newer jeep with an aluminum, chain driven new process case- 208,219,228,or 229.

It had the older pre chrome roud light grill. A few years older than my 79.

oh yea and it didn't have dana 44's.
I'm going to install the Transfer case (Quadratrack) hopefully this weekend. I took it off last night and with only four bolts it was faily simple. But man unboltong the front drive shaft from the transfer case was a royal pain. And the stupid clip that attaches to the output shaft *&@@#!!!
