View Full Version : Part time unit?

Picked up a spare quadra-trac today (cheap)which supposedly has a Doug Nash part time unit installed. The chain is tight and the sun gear internal splines show no visible signs of wear.

How can one tell whether the PT is a standard (1:1) or an overdrive unit?

It just occurred to me that the anwser is pretty simple, just hold the drive sprocket up to the output sprocket, if the diameters and number of teeth are the same its 1:1, if they are different its overdrive.

I am toying with the idea of swapping in the PT case for the current original leaky, strecthed chain, full-time case, at least until I have time to fix the full-time case and the whiny front diff.

Anyone ever had any problems with the t-case to trans joint? The TSM shows a gasket, however, it also shows gaskets for the t-case cover and the low range and niether of my cases use gaskets at those places. If gaskets are availible I would prefer to use them.

As a side note, after having inspected a QT sun gear, I question whether you could really get enough wear between the sun input splines and trans output splines to get a really loud shifting into reverse bang. A mild clunk or thud, I could see, but not a loud bang. Seems like its more likely to be the stretched chain. Well, will soon find out.

I would suspect you could turn the input yoke one turn and see if the output shaft turns one turn or not.

If you don't have any use for the PT kit let me know and I would like to get it from you. Minus the chain and the case you can keep that. Just a thought.
