this is the third time i am doing this , so i am going to cateloge the process with type and pics. i have not done this before so please tell me what to include, it hard to gauge what is important for someone who hasnt done it before, who will be reading it. I know what is important to me when i do it but that is all :( so please let me know what you wanna see. i'm replacing several bearings and seals that have gone bad, and will tear it down completely. thanks -Trev

An exploded view with numbers to each part, corrolating with pictures. On the pictures, it would be nice to have the numbers for the different parts with arrows pointing to them on the picture. In an exploded view, you may see a seal and a retaining clip and then you see a picture and can't tell which is which. I learn alot from exploded views, but since they are usually drawn, you can't tell what the peices are in real life. Just my $0.02, either way, I'm sure I'll be using your write up in the future when I go to tear apart my QT. Thanks!

Here is a detailed look at what you DONT want to find during the center diff inspection of parts....

how about tips on removing the spring clips, the differences between them, warnings when tearing down a part time unit (i.e. you can't remove the shaft without removing the shift fork first! don't ask how I know that...)
common tools that are used and things you can get by with, etc.
I just did a tear down and rebuild having never seen a QT in my life- all I thought I needed was a chain but the diff was shot, so I bought a rebuilt QT and the part time kit in it confused the hell out of me. I've got pics of that if you want them, since they don't match the manuals. Also, what parts you can't remove without having new ones handy (i.e. oil seals) or if there IS a way to do it, include that.
There. That's my off the cuff honey-do list for ya bb74! smile.gif

i am going to make a list of tools, i will make the best pic/diagrams i can, someone will have to help me put the whole thing together because i have no idea how to make it all into a comprehensive document. this is the third time i have done this so i have a good idea of that to expect..and also i am going to replace the adapter between the trans and transfer case cuz mine is busted and warped. i remeber the hardest part is removing the clip to get the rear output bearing out..that will get special attention..thanks

I'm more than happy to help ya out in any way I can. I was quite frustrated from the lack of information available for some of my incident specific questions, being a novice mechanic and finding myself mired in QT stuff. Ended up just short of disassembling the differential. Just finished the TC last night, and haven't even seen if I did everything right.
Maybe a low budget approach would be good- seems most of us are dead broke.

while we're on the topic, can either of you tell me how the edrive switch is SUPPOSED to feel? Mine came apart and I put a cotter pin in the back, the little plate rotates w/the knob, but it doesn't seem to be a very tight fit. I'd call it just short of snug but not loose. Does that make sense?
