I have a trusted mechanic who reports that he cannot find a new carb for my 90 GW. They put in a rebuilt and it runs worse. They have been looking for a new one for 3 weeks.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

Max

No disrespect to your mechanic, but can you give us a bit of feedback on why he thinks the carburetor is the problem?

Well just a tidbit of info.. as we know everything wears with time and use.. including carbs.. and including the mainjets .

I put a rebuilt carb in my rig and it was terrible.. the main jets were new and fresh. (and way smaller than my old mishapen worn ones). As the entire engine and all its components wear out.. they get larger clearance's.. little bit less compression and over all little looser.. and the tune situation changes..

Ya cant just throw a new/rebuilt carb on there and think its gonna run right cause MANY things are worn. Its not a fresh new engine anymore.

A carb needs to be properly tuned to whatever it is feeding so todays methods of guess and swap isnt gonna give you very good results.

I know a few people that have recently told me a story of all the parts and some multiple replacements of parts that they have thrown at a vehicle.. cause they "thought" mabye it was this or that.. or a friend suggested mabye it was this or that and "its only a cheap part"..

Unfortuanly thousands of dollars later none of these people have there cars running right..

If I were you. (this is me not knowing the whole story yet but) I would make SURE and get any and all parts that are removed. (Even if they try to tell you they need to turn it in for a core fee).

Its your right as a customer to get these parts cause it is how you can protect yourself from fraud. (if you can see that a part is good that they replaced you may have some recourse).

My real advice??? Become intimate with your carb. Educate yourself to the point where you could rebuild/tune it in your sleep.. then take the situation into your own hands..

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the feedback. They didn't specify the parts that are worn, but they did suggest that they could rebuild the carb if they had the parts. They chose to put in a rebuilt instead. They report that the rebuilt has a problem adjusting the idle. I didn' go farther with them. I naivly thought a new carb would just resolve my issues.

You can get a rebuild kit for the carb for about $45, and it would be very educational for you to try it yourself. The instructions are step-by-step, so if you stay organized it'll go just fine. Then you can let your mechanic tune it for you.

However, carburetors are not the most common thing to go wrong with a Jeep like yours. That's why I would guide you to make a better inquiry of your mechanic -- so both you and he can benefit from the feedback available here. Unless your mechanic works on FSJ's regularly (doubtful, but possible), there's no better source for troubleshooting than right here.

2150 carbs are really pretty simple. What are the symptoms?? Does it run rough, hesitate, won't idle, bad gas milage (worse than "normal")?? Tell us what it does then we can help more. It is VERY true what is repeated around here all the time, THE BEST JEEP MECHANIC IS YOU!!
