 Being mechanically declined myself, I figured maybe you Jeep folk could render me some assistance... My 79 Cherokee, 360/ th400/ quadratrac/ 3.54 gear ratio, shifts out of 1st gear at 30 mph, and out of 2nd around 45. This is when I'm driving normally, not flooring it or anything. Is this normal? The rpm's seem awfully high to me. Hubby thinks it may have a shift kit. I think he could be right, and I also think more than one opinion might be helpful. Throw me some ideas. smile.gif TIA :D

Pocahontus,
On the passenger side of the th400 is a bell shaped thing called the vacuum modulator. It has a vacuum hose from the engine attatched to a nipple in the center of the mod. Pull the hose off and insert the appropriate sized allen wrench into the screw inside. Screw it in for a higher rpm shift and out for a lower rpm shift. Adjust it for your driving style....voila!

LMAO!!! :D
No... Jen is stylish... it's a 'cloth' gas cap... ;)
I couldn't resist, Jen... sorry.... guess Jude will beat me up later...
Yeah.. just back out the allen screw for your desired shift points.....
Everything I have ever owned with an automatic (all TH400/350's) have seemed to shift at the wrong rpm. It's this simple? Some days I think I should not be allowed to own a vehicle. I feel so stupid.
Did Jeep make a bicycle?

Thanks for the answers, guys! As soon as the weather clears a bit, Hubby will be making the necessary adjustments. Why not me, you may ask? You do NOT want to know how many ways I could screw it up!!
By the way, Todd, it's not merely a cloth gas cap... it's the trendy new "PO didn't know you can buy replacement gas caps so he decided a glove was just the thing" gas cap! :D :D
