View Full Version : Pull it or not pull it - That is thy question?

Well, between reasoning and asking around, I have figured out that the rings on my freshly rebuilt 401 have not sealed (Butt-load of gas in the oil). Now here is the question? Do I yank the motor or do I attempt it with it in? After all the BullGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley I went through to get this thing up and running, I think I am gonna attempt it with it in. Any opinions?

Matt,

Hope you didn't use synthetic oil for the breakin of the motor... heard that the rings won't seat with synthetics. I would opted to pull it but can understand how you feel http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/mad.gif Maybe I can help you out if you need it... call me (depending on timing)

Nope on the synthetics. I used regular 10-30 dinosaur juice http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif

are you sure this is the problem?

did you do a compression check?

is the fuel pump defective, and allowing fuel in there?

Is the float stuck?

Good luck!

It Seems like it's dumping fuel in the oil for some reason and washing the cylinder walls and not allowing the rings to break in. I'd check out that first and use 20-50 for oil.

Bernie and Veeper are correct. If you are getting lots of gas in the oil, it's not the rings. Most of the gas would blow out the exhaust if the problem were the rings since the gas is in a vapor form. You seem to have too much gas in the oil for it to be blowby. I strongly second Bernie's suggestion to verify the fuel pump diaphram didn't tear and dump gas into the timing cover. If not the f/p, then almost definitely it's the carb - likely float level(and/or metering rod adjustment if a Motorcraft carb.)

I've swapped the fuel pump out 3 times just to make sure that was not the problem. The Carb is a new Edelbrock 1405. I adjusted the floats, but didn't notice any differance. Is their a way to verify the floats are not sticking? I am a dummy when it comes to Carbs!!!

if the floats were sticking it would be running quite rich...and blubberring like a fool!

actually you should be able to check via the external float bowl vent.....I know carbs pretty well but am new to the FSJ's so...............isn't there a float bowl vent line that goes to the charcoal canister? if so and the floats/needle and seats were sticking fuel would be coming out of that line when the vehicle is running.

do you have your old carb? can you put it back on and see if the problem disappears?

I am about 98% sure your lack of ring seal is the result of a problem and not the problem....

is the vehicle difficult to start after it sits a while?.......I used to have a truck(chevy) that the carb was defective and the float bowl contents would leak into the intake if it set for more than a day....and then the truck would be hard to start because there was no fuel in the carb..it would take a few moments of cranking before the carb would refill itself and the engine would crank. just brainstorming here, I wouldn't want you to have to pull the motor if you don't have to. I will keep thinking about it...

Peace................BartG

one more thing........define "buttload of gas in the oil" ;)

Buttload = After a fresh oil change and a day or two of regular 15-20 mile driving, 20-50W oil is down to a thickness of 0-30 oil. I can also smell and feel it on my fingers when I drain the oil. Almost watery....

After driving around 4 awhile, if I stop, shut er down for a few, and pull off the air cleaner, I notice fuel puddleing in the intake. Not alot, but enough to get the tip of my finger wet. Anyone? HELP!!!

your carbatater is toast.either the float is stuck or a piece of dirt is holding the needle valve open or something else equally as basic is wrong.what do spark plugs look like? soakin wet and stinkin of gas i bet.you've done all the hard stuff. a little more searching and you'll fix this prob too. good luck

I found my gremlin http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif It was a bad carb from Edelbrock. Aparently the was a bad batch (!!! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif !!!) from the factory. I took it back to where I bought it from and the took it back - no questions asked. Anyone know more about this bad batch?

How did you know the Edelbrock carb. was bad?
Do you know what the serial # was for the carb, or when it was made?

Thanks
