Ok, so it isnt the most powerfull jeep engine ever, but i love it, and the old flathead is just plain nasty below 1500 RPM. I am looking to rebuild mine, as it burns more oil than gas right now. I know alot of you would say to drop in a 360, but for me, the tough old gear-timed 6-pack is perfect. My only complaint is the low Compression ratio. What is the deal with this? Can i plain my head down to run like 9.0 with stock pistons? Also, i'm looking at buliding a custom header, and possibly a blow through turbo. (the tubo setup has already been done on a Continental six, so i know it will work) I will post the site for this as soon as i find it again. Any input on this would be appreciated. smile.gif

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark, and guess this is for the FC170? (I'm looking at a FC170 for me, right now).

I personally don't know where you can get replacement parts, or hipo parts, but I can send you to a few places where you can find out.

The Jeep Forward Control Page (http://jeepfc.50megs.com/index2.htm), The Forward Forum (http://members4.boardhost.com/jeepfc/), and The Forward Control Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/forwardcontrol).

On of these places might be able to help you out, and I wish you good luck!!

Me, I'll be taking the 350/TH400/QT route, if I get the one I'm looking at. But that's just me. :D

The old flatheads don't like having their heads planed to increase compression. They tend to develop a habit of blowing head gaskets. Maybe somebody has developed a new-technology head gasket, but historically this has been a problem.

There is a guy that has flat six in a Studebaker. Blowin' in 15 psi. He says it'll spin the tires.

what about a propane setup off of a continental 226? also some fork truck 226's have aluminum heads, may be higher compression? I know the propane will run hotter, burn cleaner and make abit more power. HTH

I agree with Alaskaman, these motors don't like having the head shaved. The biggest drawback of flatheads is head warpage and thinning the head even more is just going to make things worse.
These are low compression motors, stock 6.9:1 or the optional ones ran 7.3:1.
The greastest thing about flatheads is their simpicity and that they'll run forever as is. You start increasing CR by 30% and your essentially taking away the motors best characteristic...reliability.
Sure you can turbo, hot rod any motor but it's certainly not going last as long. If you just want a toy and don't care if it last a year...go for it. If you want a reliable motor to hop up for your 4x4 I'd get a later OHV motor and hot rod it otherwise keep the 226 near as stock as possible.

main thing would be to get hardened valves and seats so that you can run no lead fuel. keep it stock the trans and axles will last longer.
