1. After driving long enough to get hot, when I shut the GW off, it turns over slowly 2 or 3 times then fires right up?? I just installed a new Diehard 950CCA Battery with no help. Starter getting hot??
2. First thing in the morning the GW takes several starting attempts to get it running, it just started this about a month ago??

Hey SW!
Where in the bluegrass are you located? I'm down here in the BG area. All these other guys on the east coast, and the west coast, and CO are always talking about having get togethers and whatnots, I think we should try something along the same lines. I have NO where to wheel at in this rapidly developing part of the state. I'd kinda like to get out and get dirty, sometime.
As for your starting problem, I suffer from the same dilema. Rebuilt the motocrap, no effect, not even on milage http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/frown.gif Could be my timing, I'm almost positive it's out. Chain probably needs to be replaced. I'm going to do that and a new water pump (you know, just for Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogleys and giggles) at the same time. Then of course comes the new manifold and 4v edelbrock carb, and then the monsterized ignition.
I say by the time I finish with The Minnow, she should be able to start a couple of SR71's.
Oh yeah, check your timing. Like Clark said, it's probably advanced.
Peace,
Nathaniel

I am from Hazard, In the eastern part of the State. It would be great to have a rally. The CJ guys have one every year in London, I have been couple of times, but the trails are way beyond sane. We have some of the most spectacular places to 4wheel, You can leave the blacktop and drive all day without seeing another person. Email me, we will see what we can get organized.
Could the Vac advance cause the problem?? I am going to break down and scrub the front of the engine, to find the timing marks on the front cover, this weekend. I will eleminate that as a problem.

If your vacuum advance was off, then your truck would probably be running like doodoo most of the time. If this is also happening, I would check the advance. Now that I've given it a seconds more thought, the advance being off would screw upt he timing, so.......

when it has problems starting like that try pulling the vacuum hose from the dist. advance and try it again. I noticed that my advance stays on after I turn off the engine. I once hooked up the vacuum guage and still had 17hgs of after the motor was off. That means that the distributor was at full advance when I would restart it. Is this normal or did some dip Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley prev. owner miss rout some lines? Who knows.

does engine ping when warm and under a load? thats a sure sign of too much advance? check your cables going to starter and to ground. if one of these is loose or dirty, that can cause the starter to drag then speed up once amperage has burnt off the crud.could be early stages of solenoid or starter failure too. good hunting.

No pinging at speed or under load. I am going to check the timing tomorrow anyway, I will also check the wiring, I never thought about that. Makes sense though.
