Is the Mercedes Unimog considered a FSJ? Or is it just a working machine? Anyway, it still moves along where the FSJ comes to a halt. And if it is included in the FSJ family, I will register a 2nd vechicle in the FSJ-association.

What you have is a FSM (Full Size Mercedes)
It was not built by Jeep. However, that said, a Unimog is a very cool vehicle. I,ve only seen one around here. A doctor here owns it for a toy. Cool Toys!!! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Since you're in Sweden I understand your question because most of the world besides North America uses the name Jeep for a generic term for 4x4's(an honor actually) but here in the US Jeep refers to the specific brand...Jeep.
So no a Mog doesn't really belong here as a topic for FSJ discussion but like everyone else says they are one truely capable and cool 4x4...just not a Jeep http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

a few months ago there was a feature in one of the mags about a unimog clubs get together in moab.one picture in particular stuck in my mind of them all coming down lions back.

there were a few different flavors-pick ups, fully enclosed ones, and my favorite was a little tiny one with something like an 80 inch wheelbase sporting farm implament tires-really cool.

hey joe, have ya ever seen "junk yard wars"? there was one episode where they were supposed to make a vehicle that didnt move with round tires. the one team found a sazuki samuri and attached some sort of funky legs to the axles. i wondered why they all kept calling it a jeep!

No I haven't seen it Scotty but it's prolly a film made outside the US. "Jeep" is used in the rest of the world like we'd ask for a Keenex or a Coke or a Xerox copy etc...
Nice to see that here on this forum everyone takes it in stride. Sheesh on some of the Jeep newsgroups some folks really get their panties in a bunch when someone from overseas calls a Landcruiser or whatever a Jeep http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

A look into the mind of FSJers...I too watch Junkyard Wars and Battlebots. Girlfriend hates 'em

yeah, battlebots is pretty cool, too. i wnated to watch the marathon real bad.i wanted to see the episode where they had to make a vehicle that they could drive to the water, into it,around the lake, and back out. the one team used an old deisel land rover. put oil drums on the sides for pontoons, cut off most of the body, and attached a propeller to the rear output of the xfer case.

joe-its a game show of sorts, like veepster said, basically teams are put into a junkyard and told they must construct a something to do something,in a certain time limit. they have welders and other tools at their disposal.

one episode was the oving without tires, one was driving into and around the lake, another was to build a craft that could go into the lake, retrieve an austin mini that was submerged 20 feet ot so underwater, carry it to the dock, then lift it out onto the dock. that had to be one of the toughest ones.i missed most of them cause of either work,or plain old forgetfullness.

a really cool show-definately alot of creativity, good ideas, and awsome feats of engineering!

I'm glad some here know what Battlebots is.
A friend of mine and I have our bot about 80% down, just having some technical problems with one of the 4 servos, but after that gets fixed, the armor will be installed (which he is currently making out of 1/8" aluminum) and off we go (actually have to put in the application, which we have already). We haven't got a name yet,and this is only a part time hobby, but if you liked Mauler, you'll love what we have. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif The weapon, driven by a 7 1/2HP Honda engine is incredibly destructive and I kinda feel it's going to freak the judges out. We have scoured over the rules and tried to interpret them in every possible way,and being that we don't see any rule we'd be violating,we're confident it's a go. Anyway,it's going be NEXT season before we even get a chance to get in,so it'll be awhile.

"Junkyard Wars" tonight on TLC:
"Demolition Machines"--8pm EST (saw it-COOL!)
"Bombers"--9pm
"Underwater Chariots"--10pm
These will be repeated at 11pm, 12am, and 1am EST.

I still find it odd that when they built pulling tractors, they found 4 brand-new tractor "tyres" mounted on rims...

Yeah, Scruffy, definately keep us posted! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

-joe and others, thanks for enlighten me.
You're right, in Sweden, or Europe for that matter, a Jeep for us is an all-wheel drive vehicle with a truck/pick-up/van body.

But don't worry, I also own a J20 Truck -78 ex fire brigade vehicle with a total mileage of only 35000(!!!) km. The cargo section has been heightened somewhat and covered with a duraluminium (is that what you call it?) top, forming a closed space accessed via side doors and the tailgate, as well as a loading platform. It is of course bright red with wheels painted black and white in four 90 dgrs ''slices''. The only equipment removed is the siren (horns still there, but with relas removed, they have a mono-tune strong enough to send sleepy motorists through their roof) and the flashlights which I have had to replace with orange d http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/redface.gifs in order to be permitted to use it on the street. Also the readio equipment is gone, but the roof antenna is still in place. I have some old com-radio stuff which I intend to install - jst for the good look of it.

And the Unimog - yes, it is a cool machine. 6-cyl in line diesel with 8 speeds forward and 8 speeds in reverse (!!!), 4-wheel drive and lock-up diffs at your command, compressed air brakes and what have you. This one is fitted with digging unit which is manouevered from a control stand at the back of the vechicle.

Greetings.
